So maybe I'm old and stuffy, but I see plenty of anime questions here. Why no love for the classics?

Robotech (classic Japanese image license transfer and story hacking!)

And, of course, the one anime they all follow: AKIRA!

That was the first one with 'real' movement. C'mon!

Update:

Or heck, eve Star Rangers! They had a super cannon! And a wonky space fold system that would always cause the navigator's uniform to split down the front, exposing her ani-cleavage!

Classic stuff!

Update 2:

Yes, n!, all the storylines are recycled and re-hashed, but that 'IS' anime. Sentinels and Shadow Chronicles stunk, because they went off the Robotech formula: buy the rights to 3 unrelated series, re-do the dialog, and touch up a few scenes for continuity, and release them as one new story.

Oh, and the super cannon... gotta be a super cannon.

Update 3:

Eeeee, swelwynemma, ichi-ban! Honto!

Update 4:

Oh, and Ghost in the Shell is deservedly becoming classic. Right up there with Appleseed.

Update 5:

Heather W, is that your birthday? Because I have a couple of years on you, but only a couple. Did we ever get 3 robot Voltron in the states? I saw the toy, but I only remember lion Voltron and multi-vehicle Voltron on TV. Vampire Hunter D (1 & 2, Bloodlust) were good Japanese vampire fare, if somewhat standard. But hey, we like anime BECAUSE it is redone, retold, one-offs of favorite classic Japanese themes.

Update 6:

Oh, and it DOES make me feel better!

Update 7:

saiyuki_anyone?... You jog my memory! It wasn't Star Rangers, it was STAR BLAZERS where the navigator's top kept disintegrating. Hard to beat an old battleship mocked up as a starship, fully equipped with a ... wait for it... SUPER CANNON!

G- Force was okay (the green dude was 'Tiny' get it?) and #2 guy with the race car was totally badder than the #1 guy in white (in anime style! Trigun, anyone?)

Update 8:

Did they ever catch old Zoltar?

Update 9:

Yes, the re-release of old Macross was another great consistency in anime... license out one series for re-use (as part one of the Robotech saga), then, when the series is famous as one thing, re-release it as the original and tack another series on. Great stuff.

    Robotech = !

I'm pretty young to know about that show, but Ive seen every episode. (Im a hardcore fan) The new movie was okay- shadow chronicals didn't really do it for me though.

Akira, yes-Although I enjoyed ghost in the shell a whole lot more. These new anime don't have the feel like some of the classics. But Ive seen some pretty good new ones,. The thing is- it seems like its all about blood, gore, sex and violence. No good stories anymore.

    sigh.

Kids today are spoiled by digital animation. They are of the mindset that anything made before they were born must suck, as the world didn't exist before their arrival ; )

I myself am 28 years old and a huge fan of older stuff like Captain Harlock, Candy Candy, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I also enjoy Space Battleship Yamato and Macross.

Movies like Vampire Hunter D, Macross Plus, Nausicaa of the Valley of Winds and Demon City Shinjuku might change the kids' minds if you can get them to watch it.

And what about older manga? Tezuka's "Blackjack" and the very dark "MW" are two of my favorites.

Dude, I have a ton of favorite animes but I'd have to say that "Galaxy Express 999" takes the classic cake.
