What would you do if you were in this position?
I am not a child. I have children and to think that I am paying out of my own pocket for someone to teach me and they are never in class, never grades our work.I am going to college for the first time. My children are grown. I actually am very easy to get along with and have plenty of friends to prove it. I have helped my classmates with their homework, taken them their homework and copied things off for them to study, because our teacher is never in class or grades our work. You may think we are mindless or selfish, but isn't she being a little selfish also? We are not going for free! She is getting paid to do a job.I have never talked bad about a teacher in my life until now. As for learning.... I am learning, but only because I am teaching myself! You can't ask a question if no one is there to ask. Everybody in class calls me for answers, well who do we ask if I dont k

Ah, welcome to college. This sounds like an extreme case of bad college professors. Pretty much everyone who has been to college has a story about some professor who "teaches" information in a way that is totally incomprehensible, or who fails to show up, or who spends all his time ridiculing the students.
I'd go ahead and write a letter to the dean. There may be some specific system for dealing with this at your school, but chances are that your only real recourse is to grin and bear it, or vote with your feet.
The real problem is that there is a shift between high school and college that most people don't catch on to. High schools and below exist to teach people, colleges exist to give people a chance to learn. In most of the classes, you really just have to teach yourself, with a little guidance from the teacher. This is one of the biggest reasons why so many people hit college and drop out after the first year - we just don't prepare people for this, don't teach them good study habits, don't teach them HOW TO LEARN.
Common tactics for dealing with this include setting up study groups among the other students, scheduling time with the teacher between classes in order to figure out specific pieces, and looking for online resources to get your questions answered. It sounds like you're already on your way to that. Best of luck.

I wonder how big of a school is this? At community colleges they will be in the room more and help more but in universities (4yr schools, especially the big ones) you will find that some profs come in and say read this and that and I will see you next week, I am too busy with paperwork and meetings. That is pretty much college. I guess you could go to the chair of the dept but that will start a war that you cannot even have a dream of winning. I am curious if this is a gen ed (basics for your Bachelor's) class or if in your major/minor. You NEED TO DO ALL YOU CAN TO MAKE THIS WORK AND KEEP QUIET IF IT IS YOUR MAJOR/MINOR. Taking action will make you want to seem babied and a whiner and a lot of other faculty esp in that dept will think poorly of you even if they have never seen you in their life, via gossip.

Seems like you have no choice but to complain, she will continue to do this until someone complains. She has probably been getting away with this for awhile because most younger students like it when the teacher isn't present. Maybe it's her way of testing to see if you understand what your learning without her presence, therefore if you did have a question or a problem then she would have to deal with this. Stop and think before reporting her if:
1) Other people in your class are bothered by this
2) Do you and others feel you need her presence there consistently.
3) You have had enough of the other students depending on you for help and answers.
It sounds like your bothered by the fact that your paying her to be present all the time, because you said you were learning but you feel like your teaching yourself. Sometimes we learn more by teaching ourselves.

This is an unacceptable situation and you are rightly "talking bad".
As you are a grown-up and the rest of your class is not (that is what I get), please go see the headmaster of that college. If your teacher is frequently off sick (that can happen), they need to arrange for cover teachers to be there for you in the lessons.
Especially if you are paying to attend that class, you have a way to make your point. Explain calmy, but firmly, that you (and the rest of your class, so make sure they are with you on this) will consider stopping the payments or cutting them down if there is no teacher around to teach you.
Good luck - and I hope the situation improves quickly.

Report her to the school authorities and and pray to God about the situation. That will surely get her fired and replaced with a new Christian teacher with good morals..
