How much does gas need to cost, per gallon, before you start changing the way you travel?

And how much before someone actually does something about it?

We need to get working on solar, electrical, some different types of power before we are all become poor and have to start pulling Robin Hood's on Dick Cheney's.

Update:

Thanks for the answers. I could easily tell who is a Neo-Con and who is a sensible human, or Democratic.

I hear that the electric cars out there get from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. That would definitely outrun the above posters expectations about an ecological car. Anyone with a gas guzzler and are proud of it today are suckers. I love that they don't have a problem with making the Saudi Royal family more rich or the oil corporations richer. There are suckers born every minute, as the saying goes, and America is full of them. We've become far too dependent on corporations. Right now, my husband and I drive have one small car that gets 26 mpg. I want to upgrade to either a full electric or a plug in hybrid. I hear if you get a Prius that there is a company that will convert it to a plug in that can get about 180 mpg. I'm also looking for a nice older pick up to convert into all electrical.

John K. Liberals and Environmentalists are not at fault. You need to get your head out of the dinasaur age. Oil corporations closed down alot of refinaries in California and in the west to help drive up profits. Guess what? It worked. It had absolutely nothing to do with liberals or Environmentalists. Geesuz, when will you people learn and start thinking about the FUTURE?

I already did...about 30 years ago when I started driving. The slant six in that 1966 Barracuda could SCREAM, and it still got great mileage.

Transportation is about where you are going, not what you are going in. People who confuse their horsepower with their personality are ...well, funny and sweet, in a muscle-car kind of way.

Edit - A C Nemesis...Hubby also wants to convert a car. We have a classic Ghia, but I'm not sure I want to convert it. He's thinking a Spitfire or an older BMW...

Second edit - John K - do you have any idea what fuel prices are in Europe or Australia? Easily twice what they are here. Those places tax the heck out of fuel, and use the proceeds to build sustainable alternatives. That sounds pretty smart, to me. Our low prices are why folks think there is a birth right to a big car, screw the rest of the world or our own children's future or not. Part of what is going to hit the fan in the next 10-20 years is that fact that China is going to try to imitate the worst of what is American. Conspicuous consumption, thumb in the world's eye, spit on the environment, me first, get what I want policies are what make us less than we are capable of being.

Going green isn't doing without. It's doing better with less, and doing some things differently. I don't get why that is so threatening.

Noah, I lean left, but I'm a libertarian in a lot of ways. Do I get to sit at the reasonable human table?? *wink*

    $50/gallon

I drive a small car, I use public transportation, I ride my bike in the summer, and walk when I can.

What is the difference between Robin Hood's on Dick Cheney's and that of Al Gore doing a Robin Hood on America and in his case he is keeping the money for himself.

I think the government needs to remove all the taxes on a gallon of gas.

    Come on! Help us out!

or we can start building new refineries (blocked by libs and environmentalists for 30 years), then maybe we can run alaskan pipeline at more than 30% capacity.

or stop requiring custom gasoline blends which drives up cost, and causes cancer, (legislated by libs and enviromentalists.)

or stop state and federal government from tax gouging fuel sales (gas co. makes 7 - 10 cents per gallon, taxes add $1.50 / gallon and up)

About $5 for both of what you said.

The cost of gasoline doesn't matter to me because I can afford it. The liberals need to get a job and they can afford it too.

At the current price it already has effected travel plans.

Well, we can't afford to drive much anymore and now we can't afford to eat either. Since the mad push to develop alternative fuels, one cannot afford food products any longer either.

When will this end? When we all starve!!
