Have you seen "The Mist" yet? What did you think of Mrs. Carmody (spoilers below)?

For those who haven't seen the film or read the book, Mrs. Carmody is the local eccentric-turned-Prophet of Doom who's the primary human antagonist as the story progresses. As fear and despair start to set in among the survivors, she quickly develops a following with her "End of Days" sermonizing, eventually turning the group against itself with calls for human sacrifice to appease the "abominations" lurking in the mist.

Non-Christians: how realistic a portrayal do you think her character was -- the inability to live and let live, the pointing of accusing fingers, the self-righteous posturing that quickly devolves to foul-mouthed curses when she's opposed? Did the people at your theater cheer when Ollie blows her brains out? (They were shouting, "You GO, Shorty!" when I saw it...)

Christians: did you take offense at the movie's portrayal of Christians? Could you see why non-Christians might fear the zealotry and "group-think" of some of your brethren?

    Two factual statements:

1.) Stephen King has gone on record for his severe dislike of Fundamentalist christianity.

2.) Stephen King considers himself to be religious and does believe in I believe the Christian conception of God.

"There's been a lot of criticism of the book where they say the God stuff really turns them off. I'm thinking to myself that these guys have no problems with vampires, demons, golems, werewolves and you name it. If you try to bring in a God who can take sardines and crackers and turn it into loaves and fishes, then these people have a problem. I say to myself, if you have a real problem then I'm doing what a novel of suspense and horror is supposed to do, which is to just scratch below the surface and sought of rub your nerves the wrong way."

    -Stephen King

As a non-Christian, i found the movie to be rather entertaining. The portrayal of Mrs. Carmody's character is in keeping with a particular sort of person Mr. King has always had a sticking point toward - namely people/persons who are over-reliant on a particular worldview.

However, looking back at his previous fictional work - he has a tendency to do this to anyone who obssess over a particular detail of life. Religion, Money, Career Advancement, the Return of a Dead loved One, etc. If you obsess over it your bound to run afoul of :cue music: "Dark Forces from the Great Beyond"

After all, we need only juxtapose Mrs. Carmody's religious demeanor with that of Mother Abigail from Stephen King's "The Stand."

Surprising that they could be worlds apart.

Source(s): Daoist-Buddhist Note: For those who have not seen read the Stand, it was one of the first books i read in English. Its rather entertaining. Mother Abigail is a character who essentially personifies the goodness left in an post-apocalyptic world.

I didn't take offense to it at all. I love Stephen King and everything he touches, and while he can be critical or organized religion and what it does to people, he's usually very positive about religious concepts. A lot in the horror genre (or things along that line) are, simply because they deal with the supernatural.

Besides, I know that there ARE Christians like that out there (even if we're not all that way)...so why get offended if it's an accurate portrayal?

I haven't seen the movie but I have read the novella once quite a few years ago and once just a few weeks ago. Don't you think that during this crisis she flipped a little and became "The Church Lady times ten" She definitely took Christianity to it's bad place. I heard the actress is fantastic and the reason to see the show, Is it true?

She is certailny a typical Xian. Rather like the pastor in one of those flyover states who had his teenagers dig up the bodies of persons who died of AIDS and burn them in a pile on the highway because they didn't deserve a Xian burial.

Do you see that it was just a movie!?! I didn't see it yet, and I will not be offended by a movie written by a si fi author.

Did you watch 'The Passion of Christ'. How did you feel! Did you feel sorry for him, and all the pain He went through! or, left the theater not believing what happened to him!

If you believe one movie! why not the other! Just something to think about. I am not asking you to believe in either.

If someone makes a movie showing the Muslims as terrorist. I wouldn't wonder how other feels about the other Muslims, because I wouldn't judge all Muslims by they few of them, and so goes with the Christians, and any other group.

    Did you enjoy the movie!

Wonderful, then you got your money's worth. It is meant for entertainment. That is all.
