Desktops are at least $300 cheaper than notebooks of the same specs. I have something of a hybrid, a notebook that's a desktop replacement. If you just want cheap, look up Acer and eMachine for desktops, they probably are the cheapest on the market. For notebook, Toshiba and Acer are the two cheapest brands. If you want quality and okay price, look up Dell or HP. I suggest you configure one on their website. Both HP and Dell always have coupons around. Currently, Dell has up to $300 off for Inspiron notebooks and $350 off for desktops. HP has 30% off for all the notebooks. Go google the coupon codes if you are interested. Both manufacturers can set up payment plans for you.

You get the most bang for your dollars with a desktop. The top performer is always a desktop. There is the issue of upgradeability, which is limited in a laptop. The fastest processors/RAM, higher-end video, larger hard drives, better sound cards are only found in desktops PCs. Desktops are more reliable so you can usually forego a long warranty, whereas it is critical for a laptop because if anything breaks on a laptop you may very well have to replace the motherboard. On a desktop PC you just replace the individual part.

A desktop would be cheaper, but it's not always the most convenient form of PC. Laptops are portable, and there prices are going down everyday.

You can find plenty of cheap desktops online and at Tech stores. Shop around. I would recommend at least 1.8Ghz Intel Dual Processor, 2GB Ram for Vista, 256Mb ATI or NVIDA Graphics card, or if you dont need the graphics, built in might be the way too go.

For a cheap laptop, try Acer or HP. Make sure that if you run Vista on it, it at least has 1.6Ghz Dual Core Intel , 1Gb of ram just, try and make it 2gb, and internal graphics.

Desktop will most always be cheaper, but you can take a laptop with you, which is nice if you need to use the computer in different places.

I have both a laptop and a normal PC. Laptop for convenience, PC for primary storage of photos, music, personal / financial. Laptop more for web browsing, work access, email.

If it's all about cost, go desktop.

desktops are always cheaper. Try getting a dell. I have an hp and I don't like them so I would suggest staying away from them. You might be able to get payment planes from a manufacture, but not from a store.

I prefer laptops because of their mobility and their size. They are a bit more expensive though. I like the brands dell and IBM.
