How can I prevent yellowing in stored clothing?
I just got out some of my son's stored baby clothing to recycle for the next baby, and a lot of the white and light things have that horrible yellowing in places. Most of the clothes have been stores for only 12-18 months. I was surprised it happened that fast. So two questions... 1) Is there a good way to get these stains out, and 2) How can I prevent it in the future. I did wash everything and store them in plastic containers with lids away from light. Thank you.

I just restored a family baby dress that the white lace had yellowed after 25 yrs. (that's how old the dress is) I had sent it to 2 dry cleaners with no success. I needed to get it cleaned because my daughter gave birth to to a girl and we wanted her picture in it. I GOT SOME OXI CLEAN AND DISSOLVED SOME IN WARM WATER. SOAKED THE DRESS IN IT OVER NIGHT. AND IT CAME OUT LIKE NEW AGAIN!!! Now we have it for the next girl in our family. I also keep it in an airtight bag.
Source(s): air is what causes yellowing. Make sure you get the all the air out. Put the clothes in air tight bags before putting in containers in storage. Yes acid free tissue and boxes are a good idea, They have the acid free boxes at the dry cleaners you can purchase it you have something you want to preserve they use for wedding dresses and such. - 1 decade ago
If you want to prevent clothes from yellowing, don't store them in contact with wood or plastic. Wrap them loosely in clean muslin or acid free tissue and store in acid free boxes.
