Its meaning is pretty close to 'unfortunately'.
"I would have won the race, but alas, I tripped over my own feet"
"I would hasve won the race, but unfortunately, I tripped over my own feet.
'Alas' has a more dramatic, poignant sense.

Old French - ha las, Modern French hélas. Meaning weary or wretched. Latin - lassus (wearied).
