By rules only so many players on the field can have a speaker in there helmet to hear the coaches. They put the green dot on the helmets so the refs know who has them.

QB's have a radio receiver in their helmets. NFL rules specify that only one of those helmets can be on the field of play at any time. The rule also specifies that the helmet with the receiver must have a green dot on the back of it so that the Ref's can see how many are on the field.

Miami ruined Chicago's perfect season in the mid 80's. But they had Marino as QB and they had won a few games so that was a little different.

Green Dot question has been asked a million times, I think I asked it once myself. it denotes the person who is legally mic-ed and/or has a headset in his helmet and is in communication with the coach

they have a microphone in their helmet. i think there is a rule about how many players on the field may have one, therefore the green dot identifies them.
