What is the green matter on deer tracks in snow?

Im thinking moss from a moss bed.

Moss usually does not root well into the ground and can be easily picked up by the hoof.

No. no one has ever tracked a deer. Deer feces is not always black and "pelletized"..Depending on the Deer's diet and eating habits, it's not uncommon for them to slip their bowels....It would also depend on how old the track itself was and when it was made in the snow......

*It could just as easily been infection from a wounded hind leg as well..It would also be dark green....

kinda sounds like something i saw on a horse once.the animal's hoof got infected and produced green pus.of course as he walked the dried pus would fall off as he walked .

maybe is was a stain from the grass the deer was walking in previously

more than likely it stepped in fecec that you missed.if they were eating grass it comes out quite green

Could be off of its tarsal gland.
