  • My dog tore my coaxial cable out of my TV. Fixable?

The cable carries cable TV, of course. The dog ran past the back of the tv, took the cable with him and it tore out, leaving a bent pin in the cable and a kind of torn cuff on it, too. Will it be fixable?

  • Who has more independence in making medical decisions: physician's assistant or nurse practitioner?

I am making a MAJOR career switch at age 40. I once long ago was premed, have excellent grades in that and my subsequent major and masters' degree (unrelated) and I completed most of the requirements for med. school, minus the MCAT. But my age, the cost of med. school, malpractice insurance, and the changing face of medicine are scaring me away a bit and I am thinking of alternate careers.

Where can I put my scientific, medical oriented mind to best work in less time than med. school--as a PA or as an RN practitioner?

Do you have any experience as/with one of these?

Do you have another idea I haven't thought of?

Money is an issue, unless scholarships are available.

    Thanks in advance!

  • How do I install OpenOffice on an older Windows OS?

    Hi!

I would like to install Open Office on Windows 95 and 98 OS's. When I tried to do it, I learned that the installer provided with the 2.x download does not work on them.

I also know that Open Office versions 1.0 and 1.1 are made for Windows 95 and 98 respectively, but I can't find a way to download them from OO's website.

Can anyone tell me either where to find an earlier version download or how to install a 2.x version on Windows 95 or 98?

    Thanks sincerely!

  • What do lesbians mean when they say they knew about their sexual orientation from a very early age?

I have heard individuals say that they realized they were lesbian when they were 6 or 7, or 9 or 10 . What exactly do they mean? I am sure I never heard of the possiblity at that age, and kids that age don't really know what sexual orientation is. Also, kids do all kinds of little experiments with whomever is around, girls and boys.

Do they mean that once they knew they were lesbian, they could trace the roots of it back to that age or to some feeling or incident, or do they literally mean that they knew at the moment that they were attracted to females in a sexual way as opposed to males?

And--please excuse my ignorance--if sexual orientation is established in an individual from a very early age, due to genetics, biology, etc., then do all true lesbians necessarily know from an early age that they are so?

  • Are editions of "Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills" very different?

I would like to purchase supposedly THE guide to climbing, and I notice that previous editions are considerably cheaper. I am quite new to climbing and would like to read about fundamentals, techniques, equipment, etc.

Should I go ahead an get the 6th (1992) edition, or has so much changed or is there so much new material that the 7th (2003) is a much better choice?

    Thanks.

  • Is there such a thing as competitive snow-shoveling? Wouldn't it be great?

I have been thinking for years that comeptitive snow-shoveling, such as racing to clean a 4 x 30 foot sidewalk completely of snow, would make an excellent athletic event. It takes strength, endurance, technique and and understanding of types of snow and ice and which shovels work best for the various types of snow. Think of team events! High school or community competitions!

Has anyone ever heard of such an event? Wouldn't it make a great sport?

  • What is the green matter on deer tracks in snow?

I like to track animals in winter. Yesterday after a fresh snow I had followed deer tracks in about 1 foot of snow for around a half-mile, when the right back tracks began to show a dark, dull green, rather grainy material around the top of the track. This only appeared at the top of the track. Perhaps the snow was deep enough to be hitting higher on the leg and picking up something there. This went on for about steps of the right back hoof and then stopped. Has anyone ever seen this? What is it? No other tracks in the area.

  • How do you deal with lightening in the mountains?

Mountain hiking has become a particular love of mine and I would love to gradually work up to mountain climbing. But I am afraid of lightening. What happens when you are roped up on some wall and it begins to lighten? Is a climber likely to get hit? What can one do to avoid the risk? (Besides just climbing in winter...)

  • Can I run Open Office Base without being hooked up to the Internet?

I downloaded Open Office and would like to use it on a computer that has no Internet access. However, to run Base, I need the Java enabler (JRE). This can also be downloaded, but installs only when one is on the Internet.

Or can I get around this?

  • Are European shoe sizes the same for men and women?

I wear a size 41 shoe in Europe--these are women's shoes. If I want to buy a pair of men's shoes, do I also buy size 41? Or is it like the US where an women's 8 and a men's 8 are different sizes?

  • How do I learn to assert myself?

I grew up with arguing parents and also with a lot of idealism from church, various books, etc. I always give in to others ideas and cannot stand up for myself. I work too hard to succeed and to make peace--to make myself lovable. This has been like a coping strategy for me and I ended up with a 4.0 GPA through grad school, etc.

But I am screaming inside! I want to be heard and respected. I love the people I am dealing with, and am afraid to hurt them, am also afraid they will just tell me to go. I don't want to go (away from the situation I am in). I want to be respected. I am 40, professional, outwardly successful, inwardly a mess....!

  • Is Open Office Base as good as Access, better, as easy, easier?

I will get a new computer and want to use Open Office because it is free and the applications I develop with it can be used by those I want to share them with easily. How does Base rate? Is it good? Is there anything I have to know before I make this step? I do fine doing anything with Access.

  • Will my skin become dependent on a moisturizer?

I am using a great olive-oil Q10 moisturizer. But will my skin become dependent on it and thus age faster if I stop using it? I mean faster than it would have if I had never started? In other words, does moisturizer change the way my skin produces its own moisture?

  • Has anyone ever tried lighting denatured alcohol to make a smokeless, beautiful fire?

I have tried this with isopropyl alcohol and salt and it works safely and perfectly, but I am in Germany where isopropyl alcohol is expensive and "Brennspiritus" (94% denatured ethanol) is cheap. Any experience out there? I plan to pour it into a bowl, pour some salt in it and light it. Anyone ever do this?
