why do people get upset when dogs are kept outside?
If a dog is an outside dog...how come people get upset because you leave him outside? Recently i placed a question about training my puppy and how he was going to be inside the house right now cuz he is small but later i was going to keep him outside...he is a lab..known for hunting, running, swimming, digging and so much more...why would i keep him inside? wouldnt that be the cruel thing to do? Why are people so weird about that? Please explain.

Dogs are pack animals and when they are kept outside only it is hard for them to get enough interaction with the rest of their "pack" (you and the other members of your household) to satisfy their emotional needs.

I don't see a problem with it if you are going to spend a lot of time outdoors with him but personally I think dogs like being inside with thier human companions at least in the evening. Maybe you should consider bring him in at night after dinner or something so he can spend some time around you and your family he also needs to be socialized well if you leave him out or he may become agressive to humans and animals he is not supposed to be hunting.
All that said he will be okay as long as he recieves the proper care and attention if you socialize him well and provide proper shelter for him and give him lots of attention he can be an outside dog but I do question why you would want an outside dog

Dogs are pack animals. If you only have one dog, the family becomes it's "pack".
They need to constant interaction with other living beings to be healthy and well adjusted.
People who use labs as working dogs for hunting usually have a pack of dogs, so if they are outside, they are with the other dogs.
A dog that is raised from a puppy indoors will probably not adjust well to being a strictly outside dog. There are questions on here all of the time from people who keep their dogs isolated outside and the dog has behavior problems.
Having an inside dog does not mean the dog takes over the house. He doesn't have to sleep on your bed and all of that.

Most people who buy dogs don;t buy the dog for a lawn decoration, if that were the case buy a lawn gnome and save on the food prices. Most people buy a dog to have a companion and friend and like to have it interact with their family inside of their house. Buying a dog and putting it outside 24/7 is cruel on many different levels, first the dog has no interacting with people or daily situations therefor it can become aggressive and hurt people. Another reason it is a bad idea is, depending on where you live a wild animal may come lurking and end up hurting your dog. Just put yourself in the dogs place, being born and being chained up somewhere with no daily interaction with people. Just sitting there trying to pass the days by. You are not living, I wouldn't want to live like that and I wouldn't want my dog to live like that. It is not cruel to keep a dog outside for a few hours and let him get fresh air and such but then you need to bring him in and spend time with him let him be near you. I am not saying you are wrong everyone thinks differently but most people will agree on, Why get a dog just to chain him in a yard?...

Hi
Well it is due to a few things like weather conditions and Interaction with family
See my neighbors across the street have a female lab and she is kept in the house she is let out on a regular basis but she loves the interaction with her family and she would absolutely flip out if she was left outside as she craves the constant human interaction even though they are gone all day @ work and there son is @ school all day when they all come home she has that family time and it never fails when her daddy gets home every night even on the coldest winter days he make time to go out and play fetch with her
See we live in Michigan and we just had a nasty storm last night It was classified as a Blizzard 12+ inches of snow and I just looked out my back door and he is out there all bundled up Playing ball with Lady So that is why allot of people are funny about keeping a dog outside as it is like out of sight out of mind for most they get forgotten and in bad weather is when they need us most and they don't always get the best of care they need Not that you would be that way but you have to realize all we ever hear about is the bad things never ever the good Keep that in Mind
Take Care and Happy Holidays
Respectfully Yours

Keeping a dog perpetually outside has quite a few risks. Injury, straying, poisoning, theft, attack from intruding animal, increased territorial aggression among others. Why get a dog if it is going to be left in a yard or on a chain and eventually forgotten about? Why leave a companion animal who NEEDS a social life outside, alone? Dogs are very social, they enjoy being with their "pack" and when they are secluded they begin to develop behavior problems which can lead to an increased liability risk.

While dogs are hearty animals they are still a living being. All living beings deserve respect. Think about putting on a fur coat. You would be able to stay outside longer than if you did not have it on but after a while you would begin to get cold, very cold. Additionally, dogs thrive on being part of a pack. When they are chained up outside, they do not get the interaction and time they need. Think about being isolated for a long time. Your mind would start to change. While I know dogs are not human, they do have feelings and need warmth. I am one of those people who feel you should not have a dog if you do not plan on opening your home to the dog and having it as part of your family.

Dogs are primarily pack animals, packs stay together. Why get a dog and not interact with it? makes no sense to me. Even people that use their dogs for hunting ect keep a closer contact than what you seem to be planning. How are you going to keep the training up that a intelligent lab needs? Being isolated from the pack will bring up destructive behaviors.......barking, digging, chewing.....aggression.

Well....I have a chocolate lab and there is NO way I would keep her in the house!! She weighs 75 lbs and she sheds way too much!!! But people think that when you have a outside dog you don't show them that much attention. Or you don't take care of then like you should. But people always voice there opinions I really don't pay any mind to them cause I know I pay attention to my lab. (She is my husband's baby, of course it doesn't help the fact that she is a AWESOME duck hunter...lol)

Labs are dogs that fair well outside and are happy living outdoors with a dog shelter for bad weather, and shade for hot weather.
The things that bother me about people who keep their dogs outside are:
1. Owners who tie up their dogs. (I HATE THAT)
2. Owners who feed them/water them and that is it. (Dogs need petting/love/talking to/play, etc..)
I have a lab and a collie. They are outside dogs, but when I come home from work they come into the basement while I work on the computer, workout, etc.. That way they can lay on their special blankets and get all the attention/love. If they are filthy, then I bathe them and keep them inside that night. If it is cold outside,(although I know they have a fur coat) I bring them inside.
They love me for it and they are good inside! No chewing/destruction and no "accidents".

Dogs are pack animals. You are it's pack. It is cruel to forcibly separate a pack animal from it's security. Yes, Labs are known for high energy, digging, running etc.c, but that does NOT mean that you plunk them outside and let them "entertain" themselves - you exercise and train them or buy a lower energy dog. And no, keeping a dog inside is NOT cruel. Putting them outside in a kennel with no interaction is cruel and leads to more dog bites than people realise. A dog can't learn manners in a kennel by itself.
