If you're offended by "Happy Holidays"?

Why is it offensive if someone says "Happy Holidays" to include all the December holidays instead of just "Merry Christmas"? I mean - you realize that Christmas is only one of several holidays at the latter part of December, right?

I mean, would you be offended if I ran around shouting "Merry Yule" and "Happy Solstice"? Is it that you selfishly just don't want to share the latter part of December with people of other faiths, are you upset you can no longer discriminate against people of other faiths with exclusivity, or is it that you truly don't believe people of other faiths exist or have any right to celebrate their holidays? I mean - you realize the whole decorating the tree thing, having feasts and gatherings with family and friends and exchanging gifts were all originally pagan practices associated with Solstice/Yule celebrations, right? I just don't understand why "Happy Holidays" is so offensive. Enlighten me.

Update:

Grace - interesting point of view. I've noticed it's mostly Christians who seem really upset about Happy Holidays. No one else seems to mind it all that much. So I don't think it's people who aren't celebrating any holidays that take issue with Happy Holidays. I could be wrong though...

Update 2:

Ivana - who is making you say Happy Holidays? I always hear more Merry Christmas than anything else. I mean - I'm living in a major metropolitan area and Christmas is alive and well where I am. :)

Update 3:

Drama - not sure I understand your answer. Are you saying that if you say Merry Christmas to me I should say Merry Christmas back to you even if, say, I am Pagan and celebrate the Solstice? Well, personally, I celebrate Solstice/Yule, but have NEVER had a problem with people who say Merry Christmas. If I know someone is Christian or who practices Christmas I will always politely wish them a Merry Christmas just because I'm thoughtful that way.

Update 4:

Myra - no, I'm not unhappy. On the contrary I'm VERY happy. :) Just looking for the real psychology behind the whole "Merry Christmas" vs. "Happy Holidays" nonsense that keeps coming up. :) I am being enlightened though - thank you.

By refusing to favor their faith and holiday over all others you are being prejudiced against them, the majority. Much like how you discriminate against them when you refuse to allow their religious convictions to be used to deny civil rights to others. </sarcasm>

I say Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. I don't get offended when people say Happy Holidays at all. I think people more get mad at the fact that now people are MAKING us say Happy Holidays and pretty much not allowing us to say Merry Christmas, and that it's wrong or impolite. They say it's not "politically correct." And nobody wants to be told what they are allowed and not allowed to say. People should be able to say whatever they want, and even though Merry Christmas is not all inclusive, I can and should be able to say it if I durn well want to. See what I mean?

And nobody should be offended by either saying either way because the Holiday "Season" is not the time to get offended by petty little things that don't actually harm you and are only "offensive" if you choose to make them or take them that way.

    Merry Christmas and

Happy Holidays to everyone on Yahoo A!

I don't know how anybody could be offended by someone saying "Happy Holiday's". I say "Merry Christmas" though beacuse that is the hoiday that I celebrate. If the person that I say it to happens to be pagan and they say "Happy Sostice" to me, I won't be offended. It would be ridiculous to be offended. I now know that person is pagan and I think that's cool! Say what you celebrate I think. Don't wrap it all up in one saying. Be proud of what you celebrate and what you believe in I think!

You're right. I'm afraid to even write "Happy Holidays" on the bottom of my answers because it offends people. Seriously, it's a stupid reason to be offended. Grow up, realize you're living in a world of 6 billion people and suck it up.

I don't find it offensive and I wouldn't mind some of the other greetings either. I send and receive greetings from friends of other faiths and they surely do exist.

You appear to be unhappy and for that I feel pity for you and I hope if you are unwell you will feel better soon.

I don't think I am the person to enlighten you but I hope you are fortunate and will find the answers you are looking for.

I'm a Christian. I am in no way offended by anyone wishing me a happy time. I am not even offended by Happy Halloween. I AM happy and I love it when people wish me happiness!

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!!!!!

I don't understand it either. It's simply wishing joy to you and yours for the holiday, whichever that may be. It's not like we're all psychic and can tell what faith complete strangers belong to or practice.

i think it's stupid but the reason (i think) it is, is because it's assuming someone is celebrating a holiday. maybe they don't celebrate anything and they are offended by your being so assuming. and just assuming every single person celebrates a holiday. it's stupid but who knows, maybe there are people like that...

  • Oh none of it makes sense

I gave up when I realized
