Where do you limit curse words for kids?
Some people consider cursing to be just the major social no-no 4-letter words, but I have met parents who also believe that "crud" and "shoot" are curse words because they mere substitutes for those aforementioned 4-letter words.
Where do you draw the line? What words are acceptable in your household, and what words are pushing it?

when I was in second grade I kicked a little boy for saying "shoot". I thought he'd cussed, and that was wrong! I went home and told my mother what he'd said to me, and what I'd done, and she laughed. My parents didn't cuss around me, obviously, and it wasn't all over in the media back then either.
As for me, crud or shoot, or drats, or rats wouldn't offend my ears. Actual cusswords are not allowed. Period. Ever. At this point my son is 11. When he's old enough to vote, he's old enough to decide what comes out of his mouth. I know for a fact kids cuss when parents aren't around. Oh well, but I don't have to hear that crap come out of my little angels face.
When he hits high school, perhaps I'll reevaluate my stand, until then, this is how it's going to be.

well i'm not a parent but common sense to me says that words like crud and shoot are okay and that cursing should only be the major 4-letter words... But you should also teach about how racial slurs and words demeaning someone's sexuality are also off limits.

Shoot is okay with me (my kids are 8 and 12), 'fudge' is out (because of the caliber of the word it replaces) and the older one occasionally lets out a 'crud' that makes me cringe, but I let him get away with it because he's in middle school and I know kids say things that are so much worse. Other than the run of the mill curse words, our list includes 'dummy', 'stupid', 'retard', or anything else that would be a derogatory term toward another person. I'd much rather hear a 'crud' because someone hit their toe than hear a disrespectful name coming out of their mouths.

I don't like for my kids to say crap or sucks. It just sounds horrible coming out of a little girl's mouth. But they do say butt, I don't mind freakin, cuz I say it and I don't mean it as the other word at all!! I don't talk like that. It is funny how different people are about it. My husband cusses around his mom and dad and I can't believe they allowed him to talk that way. Now I have trouble getting him not to do it around the kids because it was acceptable for so long. Good question though!!

i made a small list of unacceptable words. i would not worry about crud and shoot. it's hard enough enforcing just a few no-nos.
i would always allow the kids a little chance to say the really bad words. Like maybe one minute a day at 12:01 or something so they can get it out of their system. Send them to their room if you don't want to hear it. this worked well with my kids.

those words like crud and shoot are good because you you want your children to be cursing or just substituting them with any words

crud and shoot are probably okay, but for a small child "crap" just doesnt seem like polite talk. Not necessarily cuss words, but sounds improper.

Our family strives to eliminate the use of all slang and curse words in the interest of clear, appropriate communication between both children and adults. This eliminates the potential of offending others and of inappropriately influencing children.

I personally am not objectionable to crud, crap or even this sucks. But my ex husband is opposed to those words . So we do try respect one another's individual feelings as far as our daughter goes, so I discourage her use of those words as well.

My kids were saying freakin instead of the other "f" word. I wouldn't have a problem with it except they are 10 and 6, so freakin is on my no-no list.
