Why are churches and christians are so upset about the movie "The Golden Compass?"?

Or any other religions?

Update:

I just want to be clear on one thing: With this question I did not intend to insult anyone, because I believe everyone has his or her own right to believe in whatever suits him or her best, with what he or she can live and be happy with it.

I have to be honest, I watched the movie and for me it was just another movie, nothing more nothing less and I did not understand the uproar about it.

    Standard bigotry against atheists.

I've read the books, and it does describe an ultimate war with God. But it is no better or worse than any other bit of science fiction or fantasy I've read.

The movie is even more tame than the book, and touches religion even less than the books do, which is not much.

It really all just comes down to "ohhhhh, he's an atheist! Shun him!". It's rather sad. The Narnia series was much more overtly Christian than the Compass series was atheist. Yet you don't see bands of atheists running around calling for a boycott.

Unlike them, I'm comfortable enough as an atheist that I can actually enjoy Narnia without coming all unhinged about it possibly putting forth a worldview contrary to my own.

Here's my opinion. Now I'm Catholic and I love Star Wars, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. Here's the thing though, in each of those you have fantasy! Star Wars = lightsabers, far away worlds. Chronicles = far away worlds, children fighting for the greater good. LOTR = a standard good vs. evil, based upon the stories of the Bible. Harry Potter = if you can decipher it, it's standard fantasy. The only thing with Harry Potter is that it started out so innocent and turned so evil so quickly within the 7 books and it's frankly not good for children to see or read.

I know nothing of the "Golden Compass" but what I've seen and read in reviews. From the movie preview...it looked stupid. Reading into it more I find that on the surface it looks like a children's movie. Nicole Kidman playing a gorgeous character and a small child on a mission. However, it turns out that this mission is to kill God. You can't kill God, number 1. But also, to put this into a children's movie, one that they are going to want to go and see this season, it aweful! To fill a child's mind with a thought like this is of course going to spark contraversy!

""These books denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the virtues of atheism," said Bill Donohue, president and CEO of the Catholic League.

The film itself is unlikely to offend — because New Line Cinema has tried to keep religion out of it, focusing on the story of a little girl named Lyra and her journey within a strange, parallel universe."

Basically, It's an attack on the Chronicles of Narnia. A jealous atheist making a whole series just because a religious man wrote a book that had Christian symbolism in it. That hatred of Christianity is what gets me upset. A man who wanted to make a fantasy book for children that had the archetypes of Jesus and the Bible in it and called it the Chronicles of Narnia. Then comes an atheist who reads it and then becomes upset himself and writes his own fantasy book as a rebuttal of the other guy's book... very arrogant.

It's a work of fiction - and to be honest, most of the questions I've seen regarding this topic haven't been from Christians - they've been from other groups asking "Why are the Christians upset".

I'm religious. I read the Chronicles of Narnia as an athiest and have read His Dark Materials as a believer.

Was never offended. Small minded petty fundies who rage when under scrutiny however, are another kettle of rampant bible bashing fish.

It doesnt actually say "And then she killed God" These people rant before actually reading stuff. Its like when Black Beauty was banned because it was assumed it was empowering black people.

Don't have a clue. Seems pretty simple to me .If someone finds anything offends their sensibilies, whether it be a movie, book or whatever, then don't go and see it,or read it etc.,and leave everyone else alone to enjoy .

  • I'm not upset about it. It's bombing in the US. After two weeks it's only grossed 49 million. The budget for the film was 180 million.

I refuse to give my time and money to Pullman and his agenda.

    To each his own!

The books had heavy anti-religious themes which were severely toned down into anti-authoritative themes.

I don't know why they get so upset when one anti-religious movie comes out every few years. There are hundreds of religious movies and you don't see atheists organizing boycotts and staging picket lines. They are just so nutty and insecure.

harry potter introduce witchcraft, now next level up.

what is in a person heart..so they be.

actually supernatural stuff is coming...of both side light vs darkness

    hate vs love

    truth vs lies

    good vs evil

    holy vs wickedness

man can not serve 2 master

    Jesus or satan

and there is no neutral ground..none.

peace of Christ or fear from satan.

can't have fear and peace..ove joy.

    joy vs misery

and only the Good will win..for the bible said so..Jesus already conquered satan, stripe satan of all power, but deception(lying) and took away death.

we the christians as we mature with knowledge, wisdom, understanding and practicing it on ourselves, healing by words of faith..faith work by love from GOD..faith works when we are born again

holy ppower of GOD works when we've been baptized inthe holy spiirt power and fire.(boldness) power is authority.

the blood on the cross stripped satan

this is why song about the blood is vital in traditional church, whom kicked it out..cause it sound gross...DUH!!

hosea 4:6 my people are being destroyed for lack of knowledge, and pastors/teachers/prophets/apostles who teach "FULL TRUTH" bring protection to their children too, again FULL TRUTH taught to the masses online, one on one..ect
