What if you are 13yrs old, and your parents didn't teach you about dogs?
My question is why is a child (or young teen) who has a dog that is pregnant treated like a criminal? How can a child automatically realize the impact of breeding and/or accidents, and/or spaying/neutering if they are not taught by the parents? How are they to know about the genetic faults, euthanized shelter animals, dangers of breeding, birth etc if they are not taught by adults that know or care about these things? How are they to learn by being attacked and called names they aren't even sure of the meaning of? Is everyone on here who has made a statement like "if you have to ask that ,you shouldn't be breeding" or "you byb!! you are the reason millions of animals die every day" lucky enough to have been raised by parents that DID know and care enough to teach you these things from birth on? Did you all know to spay and neuter and why you should even at 12 or 13? I seriously want to know if you grew up with this knowledge? or if you learned later after seeing and being taught?
This spawned from seeing several people who were attacked, coming back later to ask "what's a BYB mean?"
Calm down bubble,,I'm not either. I'm just trying to find out if adult "professional" breeders on here were raised with this knowledge , or if they learned like most people after life, experience, and growing up.
Exactly Jimini,,that's usually how it happens, but I'm trying to figure out why these people (alot kids that also weren't taught) get fried for a question, when it isn't their fault that mom or dad bred their dog, or allowed it to happen, or don't believe in spaying/neutering.
Please guys, don't analyze me personally. Just take the question for what it is.
Lady, that was very nicely said. I'm asking as an in general though, and have children older than the 13yr olds I referred to. I'm just trying to figure out if the bashers bash because they grew up with this information, and honestly don't understand how someone could NOT know,,,or if they are forgetting their youth and ignorance.

You know what, there are just some people on here who just love to fry people. I believe that they are sad excuses for human beings (maybe why they share their lives with only dogs(poor dogs)). I mean come on if you have been here for awhile you will know
*These people never ask their own questions
and if they do it is some sort of whinge not a real question about dogs.
*They spend their lives on here only answering controversial questions
*They very rarely answer a question without a great deal of hate and anger
*They are going to thumbs down me big time for this one
but they are a sad bunch of people who have no self esteem and need to bully poor young children
So in saying that just understand who and what they are and feel sorry for them. You don't need a psychology degree to work these people out.

I agree with Bubblezz, if you are really interested in learning about dogs your library has wonderful books on the subject. Also most parents don't teach their kids about dogs since it's not a major issue with them. They figure you would figure it out I guess. You're right though, it's up to the parents to teach you the importance of taking care of a dog. Or any other animal for that matter.
Of course I'm 52 years old and when I was 13 they didn't have spaying and neutering of dogs. Unless you were on a farm and then it was mainly bulls or horses that were gelded or neutered. We didn't have dogs spayed back then, it didn't become the thing to do until the last 10 to 15 years and then it was made a legal step in owning a dog. But there are some who do not know it's the law and, of course, accidents do happen. Myself, I was one of the lucky ones who learned about dogs from the time I was really small and have lived with dogs all my life. At this time I have four dogs, but in Iowa that is the limit, I cannot have another dog unless one of my dogs dies or is given to someone else. Although I'd love to have another one, but it's not possible.
I'm sorry someone called you a BYB since you clearly didn't understand about raising a female dog and the consequences of her getting pregnant. All I can say is that person is an idiot for accusing you of being able to control the nature of dogs and nature in general. Of course you could have gotten your dog spayed but you had no idea that is what you were supposed to do. Not all teens your age know about the pros and cons of raising dogs so that person should have kept their mouth shut instead of accusing you of being a BYB, I'm sorry you had to endure that.
And that is what Answers is all about, asking questions about things we don't understand or know about. We are here to ask questions and to answer them. And from what I understand you had no intentions of breeding your dog. Things like this do happen. It's not your fault, at least you are trying to find answers to your questions. The person who accused you probably went through a lot of the same questions you did when they got their first dog. So don't sweat it, ignore them, we're here to help, really we are.

Hmm I was raised in the country with dogs running amok no leash laws and dogs having puppies all the time, most died of parvo so we didn't exactly have an overpopulation problem in our town. Not that anyone was "cruel" with the intention of being cruel but by the time i was 10 I realized how many puppies were dying horrible deaths and had seen several female dogs I knew in town die during birth or from pyometria. Because they didn't care enough to go to the vet. My parents were some of those people, they just didn't know any better, but common sense and compassion taught me at 10 that spaying and neutering were the way to go. There were plenty of dead puppies around town, no need to contribute with my dogs and no reason to put my dogs in danger. I had to convince my mom and stepdad to spay/neuter our dogs. Sorry but no 13yr old has any business breeding their dog, maybe getting the TRUTH to them will show them what they're doing. Their parents should be more responsible. But they're obviously not going to teach them anything so if random people like us don't say something, where are they going to get it?
And I've griped out a lot more 20somethings than 13yr olds on here, actually I've not seen any 13yr old getting griped out.

This is one of the reason I think the rescue groups should go into the schools and teach kids about how to be a good pet owner like I said before kids will listen where adults don't seem to care and this is another reason I tell the kids on here that ask how can I get my Mom and Dad to get me a dog to do research together as a family learn about the breed and what it takes to be a good pet owner if a child don't know the birds and bee about a male and female dog at this age you have to wonder if they know enough not to let this happen to them but again if the Moms and Dads don't teach them they learn at school

From your question, I would say that you do know what is right and wrong. I bet you've been to a shelter or seen puppies running on the streets, hungry and mange. And I bet you knew exactly how those puppies got there.
Although parents should be held responsible for not spaying and neutering, a 13 year old who prides itself on being a responsible owner and pet care giver should know exactly what spaying and neutering does and why it is beneficial.
Yes, at 13 I knew exactly what spaying and neutering was and why it should be done. This was all during my upbringing where animals were kept outside and we had unspayed and unneutered cats that reproduced as much as possible. Despite my parents not seeing the importance of spaying and neutering, I listened to the TV ads and Bob Barker on the Price is Right - I knew after about the age of 8 that save unwanted pets and spay and neuter my animals.
Even though I wasn't in a place to do it, I knew it should be done.

There's hardly anything a 13 year old can do if their dog is preggo and the parents don't do anything - Even they ask questions here - how much info they get back is limited - breeding is through experience - Instead of asking questions here, they should be having the parents take care of the preggo dog instead of attempting something beyond their control - don't get me wrong, it's great that they want to help but how many understand the dogs needs to be left alone? i have 13 year old cousins who constantly want to see the pups, want to hold the pups, we litterally have to yell at them to get out. as for me I grew up having dogs in the family so we understand spaying and neutering.

Honestly, I didn't know at age 12 or 13 to spay or neuter our dogs. But I would not have been breeding them myself at that age, either. If I thought I was old enough to do something like that, I would have researched it myself. My parents weren't good dog owners, but I learned to be different!
ADD: I don't think it is the kid's fault. You're right, parents need to teach their children well. Children can teach parents, too!

bubble exactly they have to ask someone but when they do ask someone they get bashed
and the truth is i didnt know what the dogs were doing at 13 or 14 years old that wasnt discussed in our family as im sure it wasnt in alot of house holds
and we didnt breed them they did it them selves it just wasnt talked about
and i do truly believe there are circumstances where your dog gets pregnant and was an accident mine is living proof but by no means am i a byb i do not breed for money i did not intentionally breed and i do not breed over and over it was just that an accident
there are circumstances in which it happens without you meaning for it to
and im not trying to be rude but im sure alot of folks on here learned when they grew up and not as a child about spaying and neutering they just wont admit it if they do then they are part of the problem too or so they think we are
that is a good idea about the rescue groups going to the schools
I GAVE YA A BIG THUMBS UP DOT

People can't blame everything on their parents. There are alot of things my parents never told me, but I learned them anyway. If you own a dog, you need to be responsible and take care of it. Take it to the vet regularly, get its shots and unless you are knowledgeable enough to be a professional breeder... get the dog fixed. Dogs are not furniture or toys and should not be treated as such. They are living, breathing beings who have needs. Anyone who wants to own one should educate themselves as to what those needs are BEFORE getting a dog. If these people think their parents are going to teach them everything they need to know about life, they are sadly mistaken and will have a very difficult adulthood.
Ignorance is no excuse... not when another life is in your hands. That's like starving your (human) baby and blaming your parents when the cops come to arrest you because your Mom never told you a baby needed to nurse more than 3 times a day. The judge ain't gonna buy it... and neither do we.
