Depends on what you stand for.
CNBC's Kudlow & Co., a show with experts debating from many sides of the spectrum and with a supply side host, they;ve all determined he's the best candidate when it comes to combining pro-growth and general political values.
I think he would be a great choice if you're in favor of staying in Iraq, because he's the only front runner who's seriously suffered from a war, so he'd be more eager to clean things up. Plus he's against the constitutionally binding methods found in our domestic approach towards combating terrorism.
I'm also under the impression that he doesn't want to run a conservative Christian government, but he doesn't want to fuss over the ten commandments being at a court house.
McCain is for lowering taxes and cleaning up the budget, and I think he's tied for that with Rudy.
As for the answerer named "realst 1", what you said is just plain wrong. Those attack ads where out of line and I'm surprised Bush's supporters didn't shift to McCain, like Hillary's shifted to Obama. Then again, we're talking about Bush's supporters.

John McCain wants to bridge the divide in Washington and bring both the Democrats and the Republicans together to complete legislation that will benefit every American. He believes in the greatness of our country and stands by the decisions he has made, for better or for worse. Although he believes in overturning Roe vs Wade, and is against gay marriage I would happily vote for John McCain.
John McCain is not only a good candidate but because of his policy stances but also because of his character. He had the choice to bypass torture and come home to the states in Vietnam and instead he made the decision to stay with his comrades. He showed us the meaning of being a true patriot. And even now, after his stint being tortured in Hanoi he has a sense of humor and can laugh at himself and can smile on the campaign trail. Besides Obama he is the only candidate that is himself, and you can tell when he speaks to the people he is speaking from his heart and soul and not just reciting memorized lines.

You know I like McCain the man is an American hero and I highly respect him. However, I don't think he is the best candidate for president.
Disclosure: I like Ron Paul

Anakin Mc Cain isn't at all.
Anakin Skywalker - went to fight the Sith, became a Sith Lord
John Mc Cain - went off to fight the commies in Vietnam, came home fat while his men came back starved, passes McCain-Feingold.
See the Comparison?

Isn't McCain the one who George W. Bush's campaign claimed had a black baby, a drug addicted wife and psychological damage from his years as a POW?
Wasn't McCain the one who was smeared this way by Bush and then turned around and sucked up to him? Isn't McCain the one who pretends to be a maverick and then votes straight along party lines?
Yeah, real presidential material!

Because he is weak on border enforcement, high on taxes, criminal on freedom of speech via so called campaign reform and ridiculous for his subversion of democracy as a member of the gang of 14.
Wait, those are the reasons I would not vote for him as dog catcher.
Love his military record and salute his service though.

McCain, if the GOP was smart enough, could win anyone.
His Campaign Finance Reform, moderate (not fanatical) religious views, and fiscal conservative policy all make him a reasonable choice. But because Americans are not reasonable, he has not had a "push". God forbid he does not agree with the fanatically religious sector of the party.

Because he said 4 yrs ago that Ron Paul is the most honest man in politics.

He's not. He's too old. His time was about 10 years ago.
