Can a DNA sample taken from saliva determine sex?

For example if a DNA sample was taken from a bite out of a piece of food could that sample determine the sex of the person?

    OF COURSE YES

    BY USING GEL ELECTROPHORESIS WE CAN DETERMINE THE PERSON IS A MAN OR A WOMAN BY THE SEX CHROMOSOMES FOUND IN THE DNA SAMPLE FROM THE SALIVA

    MAN XY

    WOMAN XX

    No. The sample might be contaminated or too small.

    Yes I think it can. Our DNA has the xy xx thing in it and that tells us if it's a boy or girl..

    The saliva would need to contain cells for karyotyping.

    I only interject because someone mentioned "YY" and "XY." Close, but not quite XX = female and XY = male.

    YY=dead.
