A question for the Atheists:?
Why do so many of you (not all) express such hostility towrds those who express a belief in God on YA. Many times you give sarcastic answers to serious questions, so much so that many people preface their questions with 'serious answers only please' and yet many still give glib sarcastic answers that obviously aren't what the asker was looking for.
Really, I want to know why so hostile? Please only answer if you are being sincere in trying to answer.
I mean answer this question.
Sorry this question came off like a complaint. I was wanting to know why there were so many that answered in teh same tone to God questions.
So far people say: fear of religon or it's effect, hate of religion, a bunch of have a beef against Chistians or Christianity (funny I just asked about people expressing a Theist belief), some are trying to be funny, one thinks sarcasim isn't a form of hostility...
Anything else? Any other reasons?

They quite happily inform me that I have no moral code and "might just as well go out and kill people".
And the thing that really irks me is that they aren't just mouthing the words in order to score a debating point. They really do think that poorly of me.
So stuff 'em. The gloves are off. Sarcasm is what they deserve and sarcasm is exactly what they'll get.

I completely agree with you. But, it's not just the Atheists doing that. Alot of my friends come from different religious backgrounds. Some of them profess that their religion is the ONLY religion and that the rest of it is all bunk. Religion is a belief and or an opinion. As is being an Atheist. Sometimes (like you said) they can get hostile towards the issue. Lets face it, more people have been killed or died because of religion than any other cause or reason. It's my right to believe in what ever I want to, as does anyone else but I do not push my beliefs on to anyone else. Maybe if more people tried doing that, it might be a better place to live in.

well the in the last question I answered one of the other responders basically stated that all atheists were Nazi's. Many of the questions directed towards atheists are either insulting or show such a complete lack of understanding of atheism or frequently basic science. It gets frustrating
It's the internet. It doesn't matter what the question is -religious or not you'll get glib, sarcastic answers.
Also it would probably help if people used the search function instead of asking the same questions over and over again

We've had this question thousands of times.
"What the asker was looking for" is often the wrong answer. We prefer to give the right answer.
We're also working in an environment of hostility - Christians have a terrible track record with respect to adult behavior here, and atheists are quite probably the most frequent target of Christians' inane, childish attacks.
If you have a problem with hostility on this forum, you're talking to the wrong people. Clean up the logs in the Christians' eyes, and then we can start working on the styes in atheists'.

I have as much problem with SOME Atheists' hostility toward Theists as I do with SOME Theists getting hostile toward anybody who does not share their brand of Theism.
There are many of us who are secure enough in our Atheism that we can engage in a lively debate without getting into name calling and personalities.
SOME people, often (not always), fundamentalist Christians get into spouting ignorant, judgmental "my truth is the ONLY truth and it is my mission to make you believe like I do 'cause you're a bad person and going to hell" dogma.
Then I enjoy trying to burst their self-righteous, holier than thou (often semi-literate) bubble. If it involves a glib, sarcastic answer, that is what I give. My self imposed rules include confining my comments to what they say, not who they are.
Namaste,

I'll agree with Donna in saying that a little humor goes a long way. Being educated and earning a degree in religious studies (as an atheist, mind) has taught me that if there's one absolute truth in the world, it's that hostility begets hostile action in return. I rarely get pissy with someone unless they're really trying to convince me that my chosen set of beliefs is wrong and immoral, and/or attempt to persuade me to joining their own particular sect. Aside from that, I'm fairly open-minded. It's the idiotic teenagers that come here to rile up the Christian base that give most atheists on here a bad name.

When you say for example "genesis 1:122 says blah blah blah all we see is lack of common sense and ignorance, when you tell me I am going to hell(which doesn't exist) how do you think I feel?
No one has or will ever have proof that the bible is factual, history doesn't back it nor does science...look the word faith up in your dictionary and I think you will find it describes the facts and the meaning...
As for being aggressive, well you know if we are approached and asked a "pertinent" question ,I for one endeavor to answer politely and factually,if I get a statement like"why do more atheists commit suicide, are they unhappy because they don't know jesus" I truly want to remove those morons from the face of this planet, quotes are not a question,a "I feel great because of the lord jesus christ, how do you feel today" is not a real question,it is a statement...I could go on but I need a coffee...so please view how your questions are relevant and how aan atheists or other theists would react to the question, then maybe we can have interesting dialogue....as I say don't quote from a book we hold no value in because it would be like quoting a Harry Potter book to you in reply...peace

Because it's a fantasy that separates and judges people. Christians claim to have the truth but then they can't answer anything with much more than, "It's God's wisdom." At the end of the day, nonbelievers are heathens and "not of God". Christians claim to be tolerant but how tolerant are they with a divine rule set and a serious rush to judge? Then look at the history of the Bible. Spread through hate and violence. Spanish people have the highest percentage of catholics and it's because their ancestors were tortured. Always when the "good word" came it was at the end of a sword. Does God like to spread his word that way? Well he did. More nonsense to me.

depends on the context of the question, those that word their questions in a sarcastic way will get a sarcastic response, those that ask humorous questions will get humorous answers, and those that ask outright serious questions will get a straight-to-the-point answer, otherwise, I hold NO hostility toward Theists, they have just as much right to believe as I have right NOT to believe.....
