Hi Kristi...your cat truly needs to see a veterinarian because removing the hook could cause more damage to the tissue as well as infection which is common. Therefore a cat would require antibiotics as a preventative measure for the infection.

Here's a list of organizations who can provide financial assistance with vet bills (Care Credit is one who can help immediately): http://felinediabetes.com/vetbills

You need to get to cat to a Vet and have the hook removed ASAP. It would be a good idea to confine the cat to a carrier or small area, so it can't walk on the foot. The cat may try to chew the hook out. There are a lot of Vet that will let you ,ake payments or offer Care Credit, which is sort of like a credit card that's only good for the cat's problem. If not call animal control and ask them if they have a Vet that can help. If that doesn't work call all the local animal rescue groups and ask them if they can help. You can't leave the hook in the cats paw

You must take this cat to a vet NOW. The fishing hook is not clean and as a result, the wound may get infected, which could be fatal for the cat. He might also need stitches, depending on how deep the hook is stuck, and antibiotics to prevent infection.

Paying for medical attention for pets is just part of owning one - if your son got a hook stuck through his foot, you'd take him to a doctor, right? It's the same deal with an animal - the kitten is in pain and you need to be a good owner and get it help as soon as possible, before it gets infected!

EDIT: A friend has suggested taking the cat to your local animal shelter, where they usually can do emergency type vet care, or advise where it can be done. This could solve the problem regarding cost.

Regarding your additional details ~ I recently 'adopted' a stray and it has turned out to be much more expensive than I thought it would be. Don't panic, go along to the shelter or your local vet, explain the situation and ask them for help. Most people who care about animals will not turn you away, and they might be able to help you re-home him, too!

    Good luck to you all!

Take the cat to the vet. Most vets love animals and will allow you to make time payments for an injury such as this, or your son who left his fishing tackle around can offer to work cleaning animal cages for a couple of weeks, but this animal needs medical treatment.

To remove this hook from the foot of the cat will be very difficult, and dangerous.

If you must try you COULD attempt to cut the top of the hook off and then, very gently, slide it out of the foot. But it will be very painful for the cat and he will not understand why you are hurting him and will try to scratch and bite.

That it why you MUST take him to a vet, or someone is going to get hurt, as well as the poor cat.

    Best wishes!

How would you feel if you had a hook stuck in your foot and no one took you to the doctor?

Anyways. You are risking injuring the cat more and getting bit which will make you go to the doctor.

Ask friends/family to loan you the money, put it on the credit card, call around to local vets and see if they have a payment plan. You have no choice but take it to the vet. Then do your animals a favor and find a new home for them.

Pets are a privilege, not a right.

You'll need to take it to a vet. Seriously. Take it to a vet. If you can't bring yourself to spend enough to take it to a vet for a hook in its paw, then you don't deserve a cat.

If you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO do it yourself, which you DON'T and SHOULDN'T, wrap the cat in a thick towel, have at least two other people hold it very tightly on ALL SIDES, preferably leaning on top of it and holding it between your knees so it doesn't escape, and VERY CAREFULLY bend the hook so the barb exits the wound. DO NOT PULL ON THE HOOK or you will do a lot of damage and just make things worse. If you've never removed a hook from a fish before, find someone who has.

Your cat needs to see a vet. Even if you somehow manage to get the hook out of his foot without causing more damage or being bit, he will need to have the wound cleaned out. He will also more than likely need some pain medication and a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

Being a pet owner means being able to provide them with regular veterinary care!

Even if you are scared to take it out it is very important you do because who else will take it out?? After you do that then you should wrap it up with cloth and then take it to an emergency vet, even you can't afford it they will not make you pay right away if it's an emergency. And by the way; if you can't afford to take it to the vet then you probably should'nt have got a cat in the first place.

you will need to push the hook all the way through if possible than cut it off with a pair of wire snips if you can't push it through you will need to take something like a hypodermic needle and work it into where the barb is holding the needle to the barb slowly pull it out. clean with peroxide and than apply anti-bacteria if possible. good luck
