My husband is a 32 year Army veteran and still active. In fact, he and our son are on their way to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom (it is my hubby's 2nd tour). I think he'll be in until they force him to retire.

I have 17 and a half years of active military service so of course I will do 2 and a half more. Hell, Im almost there. I joined the Marines out of High school did 6 years with them, got out and went to college, while in College I spent 3 years in the Texas Army National Guard. After Graduating College I switched over to Active Duty Army and have been in ever since .

I think that in order for someone to spend 20 or more years in the military you have to have a special kind of attitude about it, being more than a little crazy helps sometimes too. But one thing I would recomend to you is to change your MOS every 4 to 5 years to be doing something different and see different parts of what ever branch of service you are in. Some people might tell you that changing MOS will harm your chance of promotion but dont listen to them. If you earn a promotion you will get it. I am currently on my third MOS and wish that I had been able to change 1 or 2 more times.

I have 7 down and 13 to go but I also have 5 national guard years that count for pay.

so when I retire at 20 I will get pay for 25.

I have never regretted enlisting in the guard at 17.

Currently I am in my 22nd year in the US Navy and I've loved every minute of it. Other then being away from family, I can't think of a negative thing to say about being in the military. If you have five years in now, ask yourself this question: Where do I want to be in the next 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? If you are looking to make the best of your career then your answers should be a four year college degree, elevate my training in my rate/MOS, have money put away in the TSP program, etc......I will not retire until I am told I must!

my husband is planning on doing 25 (or more) hes been in the Army 15 years so far and he loves what he does..i dont think he will ever retire, they will have to force him out LOL ...But I support him 110% as long as he still enjoys doing what he does then Im happy for him and I'll be by his side all the way.
