How is the best way to trace back on your Family Tree?

I would like to trace back further from where my nan left off before she died, but i don't have a clue how to find out. I know you can look on the internet but it can be expensive, anyone know of a cheaper way? Many thanks.

I bought a programme for the PC from asda called create your own family tree, genealogy suite which says it has everything your need to create your family tree. It includes a 30day free trial to a online census. It cost £5 hopes this helps good luck

You can research your family through www.ancestry.com or www.familysearch.org there are several ways to research your family. The only thing about ancestry and a few other sites are you have to buy a membership which can cost you $240 a year.. for full membership. I also do Genealogy. which is another way to go..is hiring someone to do it for you. Best place to start is your family.. getting as much information as possible and the library.. if you know birth and death dates of your great grandparents then thats a start also.. knowing where some of your family is buried is another start.. getting birth and death certificates is also another way of starting out... any deaths after 1936 most people had a SS# you can start there also.

If you are in the UK, Google some of the placenames from where your family came. Some places have Church and census records on-line.

Also, if you are relatively near the area, you can go to some of the bigger libraries, and they have a lot of records there, most comprehensive in County libraries/record offices. You can also get on Ancestry UK free there.

I find Roots UK good, it costs about £15 for credits but there is no time limit on using them, Genes reunited also good, cost £5 but credits have to be used in 7 days.

I've registered with www.genesreunited.com and am currently setting up my family tree on that site. They have many different formats that you can use.

And everytime I have some spare cash, I spend it on credits with the official records office.

LOOK , for branches , always start from a Birth certificate rather than a Death certificate its easier.

You could use genes reunited. Even though it isn't free the cost is minimal
