XP,I run Vista and the amount of problems I encounter supporting older hardware on Vista is BS.
I repair equipment and had to set up an XP PC just for testing what Vista does not support.

Stick with XP. Vista is slower, that's been proven. Sure it has some cool features, but I chose performance over looks any day. Early releases of Windows Vista's service pack 1 show no performance increase like everyone thought it would. However, Service pack 3 of Windows XP shows up to a 10% gain in performance. Both of those are scheduled for release sometime in Q1 2008.
You were right when you said Vista is new and expensive, but it's not very powerful. ALL games achieve higher FPS in windows xp. The only way I would get vista is if a direct X 10 game I wanted required it. But Crysis doesn't and Spore won't so I won't be upgrading for a while.
Hope that helped :)

If you're gonna upgrade from what I gather it might not be a bad idea to wait for the first service pack which is supposed to be coming out real soon (they expect it sometime this month I've read - but also read that anywhere in the first quarter of 08). I do love my vista but I have been tempted to go back to Xp because of several bugs but most have been fixed through the updates and I'm so glad I didn't go back.

Believe me both Vista and XP has a hell of a lot of bugs. If you are looking for something standard, and user friendly, then XP. If you into the current trends, like good aesphetics and want to future proof your computer; then Vista. You'll need a hell of a machine though, as it leeches every bit of processing power.
Go for XP.

XP is a proven system and Vista is still working out the bugs so if you can wait it will be best for now. But eventually Vista will be the way to go.

Vista still has bugs, and XP still has higher reviews over Vista. The only reason you should have vista on your computer is if you buy the computer with vista already on it. Do not upgrade from XP to vista. XP is still better with more programs compatible to it.

every OS and software has bugs...it's just a matter of how many and how obvious. XP still wins IMO. Vista is still in it's infancy. i have 1 PC in my home with Vista all the others have XP...the Vista machine gives me much more grief than all the XP boxes put together.

I had Vista for two months and found it slow and fragile with too many other programmes which would not work with it. I worked hard at it and got the speed up but it was never as fast or reliable as XP and it still crashed. In two months I had to re-install twice
After a especially bad day with Vista I solved all my problems at a stroke and re-installed XP. Life now is restored to a warm glow.

Don't even think about getting xp, it's old, has very few things compared to vista, has no DX10, which you will need in the future to play games, and is almost unsupported by ms anymore, (there hasn't been a windows update in like four months), and is just lame. Vista is better, it's just as easy as xp, but has way more features and programs intergrated than xp.
If you are going to upgrade to vista these are the requirements stated by microsoft. And most peoples are lower machines which is why there saying vista sucks.
# 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor (but i have 3.20Ghz)
# 1 GB of system memory (but its really nice if you have 2gb)
# 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
# Support for DirectX 9 graphics with: (dont listen get a DX10 card)
* WDDM Driver
* 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum) (but get 512!!!)
* Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware (no, get 3.0)
* 32 bits per pixel
The wow starts..................NOW!!!!!! So get vista!!!!!! and don't listen to the liars who saying it sucks!!

XP for now. Vista is a resource hog. Unless you have at least 2GB ram don't bother. Personally, Vista is full of problems now, but I'm guessing it will be better once a service pack is released. XP was problematic until SP1 then even better with SP2
