What would be the disadvantages to not having primary elections, but to simply having all the candidates run?

Update:

Heather, darling, you could have as many candidates as you want. Here's a hypothetical situation for you. Imagine five candidates run, lets call them candidates a,b,c,d, and e. The results of our hypothetical election could be:

a: 10% of the votes

b: 15% of the votes

c: 16 % of the votes

d: 34 % of the votes

e: 25 % of the votes

Doesn't candidate c have the majority of the votes in our hypothetical election?

Update 2:

sorry, d, and I didn't thumbs down anyone

Primaries are a good time for the public to read about the candidates and see what they stand for. It draws a lot of attention to the race which increases voter turnout I believe.

If you had 4 or 5 candidates running, no one person would have the majority of votes. It wouldn't work.

But there's no absolute majority. Someone has to have at least 50% of the votes.
