When does your employer need to give you your w-2 by?

I have heard in the past that your employer must send you your w-2 tax forms by January 31. Is this true?

Update:

Is there a statute in the tax laws that refer to this?

They are required to get it to you by January 31, yes.

Here's a link to the IRS website referencing this issue.

in case you'll get your corporation's EIN (corporation id style) then after a time body you could record a change W-2 and record your tax go back that way. you'll want this style and verify stubs or something to parent out how a lot your income is. many times you should attend until eventually February yet i'm no longer confident about this three hundred and sixty 5 days.

I beleive he needs to actually have them mailed out by Jan 31. the post date needs to be at least then.

Yes, Jan 31st is the last date they can be legally post marked & mailed. However, some are companies are late post marking & mailing but they don't seem to get into trouble. The IRS, like everyone else, is short handed to police this.

This is true because you need time to file for them. You need to ask your employer when they come in, and if you receive them by mail or by them in person.
