About Parvo that is in my back yard?

Is there any way to eliminate Parvo-causing bacteria in the yard so that we could have a dog for the first time in 10 years? I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Update:

Thank you Draft Dog for that piece of information on it being a virus!

I have had the unfortunate benefit of seeing this disease in action and I can attest that this virus is horrible and aggressive. Bleaching is great, as long as you soak the yard so it permeates the soil, but like they said, it's going to kill the grass and everything else it comes in contact with. There are also other products you can get that take care of the parvo virus. We used one type at the animal hospital. Go to www.KVvet.com, they have a variety of products with good prices. You can get a free catalog as well. If it has been ten years you should be fine. Just know that even if pups are vaccinated they are not fully protected until they are about 4 to 5 mos of age, as long as they have been vaccinated every 3 wks, and at least 3 times. One vaccination does not protect against parvo, it takes about 2 weeks after any vaccination before the immunity starts building, so once you have finished the vaccination schedule you should be safe. As the pup grows his immune system will get stronger. Check this website out, it has some good info: www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm

The virus should be gone by now BUT if your yard is not fenced in you can not control another dog from bringing it in agian! SO fence the yard and bleach it. You'll have no grass but you will be able to have a dog.

If it has been 10 years, you should be fine. You STILL need to make sure the pup/dog is VACCINATED according to the proper vaccine schedule.

There is no way to get parvo out of the soil.

And it is not a bacteria...it is a virus.

Not without killing the plants. But if there hasn't been an infected dog back there for 10 years, you should be fine. 6 months is the general rule of time to wait, some people wait longer to be on the safe side.

Parvo is ubiquitous (everywhere) interior our environment. even with the undeniable fact that, if the canine died of parvo 12 years in the past, the virus from that distinctive an infection could have died off some time past.

Bleach the whole yard, but its going to kill the grass

  • bleach water your lawn, though if it has been 10 years, i believe you are fine, but if you aren't sure, bleach water.
