Leather care in salty winter?

What can I do to care for leather shoes in midwest winters? The roads get salted on a regular basis, and I can see the salt stains on my new shoes. Sure, leather cream will help keep it nice, assuming the weather is just rain. Is there something to get the salt out of the leather? Keep the salt out of the leather to begin with?

If your shoes are already wet from trudging through snow etc and have the salted concoction on/in them then rinse with regular water throughly when you get home and then stuff with newspaper-replace twice a day. If you have a pair that have dried already try a damp cloth to remove residue on the surface- next time they are soaked, do as above to flush.

Apply a good leather conditioner/protector periodically- but leather breathes and is porous-it will soak in the salty concoction of snow, ice salt, road grime etc- anything that would completely block this wouldnt be good for the leather.
