Maternal Serum Screening came back positive.?
Ok, so I got a phone call from the O.B. today saying that my Maternal Serum Screeing test came back positive. She said that on the national average, I was slightly below what is expected. I was 1 in 192 and the avg is 270. She said the risk is very low. I am fully aware of the possibility of false positives and that these tests are not diagnostic, but I can't help but worry about the fact that there was something that triggered it to come back positive. I did some research and its based on hormone levels and age. I know my dates are 100% accurate, and that was a big factor in determining the result. Can anyone share their stories please? I'm scared to death.
Also, for those who don't know, The Maternal Serum Screening tests for the possibility of Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida and Trisomy 18.
I'm also only 25 years old.

My friends test came back positive, and her baby was fine. Believe it or not, the lab tech had let her blood sit out and basically it was bad. These tests enable us to prepare for potential problems by having appropriate staff present at the birth, and also to give parents and a chance to make whatever choices they need to make. But that doesn't mean something is wrong. Your doctor will also use sonogram to see the baby. Stay positive and informed. Good luck to you.

These test are not all that accurate at including possibilities just great for ruling them out. a new type of test is available that is done with ultrusound and it looks at your blood work along with measuring your baby's nucal area. even this does not say your baby has a disorder only helpful in ruling them out. Your doctor can also do an Amnio and that can give you a better picture of what you are dealing with but again its about 99% accurate at giving a no but only 40-50% with a yes. Talk to a genetic counselor, if your doc can set you up with one go to http://www.nsgc.org/resourcelink.cfm. And keep in mind that we know for sure stress is not good for pregnancy. Good luck and try not to worry you are young and those odds are still pretty good.

I believe for our age group ( i am also 25) the average shoul dbe below 700, I think mine was 1 in 10000 but false pos are very common, ask for a level 2 diagnostic ultrasound to screen for markers, if nothing is seen then I would not worry about it.

I by no ability did any of those tests. For the checklist, i'm 23. At 19 (before 35), the prospect of you having a sprint one with down syndrome are slender to none. The serum attempt has maximum of fake positives that it wasn't nicely worth it to me and the amnio scared me to dying. I made the errors of studying it and stumbled on a video that ran chills up my backbone. i'm going to by no ability do an amnio whether I do get pregnant previous 35. With the severe fake helpful fee and the reality that the outcomes would not replace my concepts no count number if or to no longer have the infant, i do no longer see any choose for them. i might like my infant whether he/she had down syndrome and getting a pretend helpful might in user-friendly terms make me subject.

A friend of mine tested positive for this through both of her pregnancies..First with her son and second with her twin girls. All tested positive and none of them have been born with any problems. I am not sure of the reason but it definetly happens.
