what is the difference between goths and emo's?

Well, Emo is a genre of music from the 80's but that's besides the point.

Goth:

better music.. to be fair.. anyone now called Emo would have been called goth in earlier generations.. but the majority of Goth music is better than what I've heard of Emo music.. (I am referring to everything from Ethereal Goth like Faith and the Muse, to Dark Wave/New Wave like The Cure, all the way to Voltaire which is really hard to classify.).

There really isn't a HUGE difference if you break it down..

"Emo's" cut themselves. Goths cut other people.
