why does mainstream music suck?

Except for a few exceptions most music mainstream music now is either really generic souding, or some emo or soulja boy crap.

But most underground less known bands or rappers are 100 times better than wat is on the radio. And i have freinds who hate rappers like 50 cent or soulja boy, but listen to underground rap.

And oh NOOOOO. I made fun of soulja boy. This means i will get comments from 9 year old girls saying "u just jealous cause solja boy is rich" OKay i no he is rich but that dosent make him a good rapper. And if ur parents knew wat superman that hoe means then... lets just say u wouldn't be listening to it

I 100% have your back on this, i feel the same way, mainstream music like 50 cent and so fourth really sucks these days, talking about meaningless crap, materialistic, most mainstream rappers these days are fake and dont remember where they came from, the music doesnt related to everyday real life issues like it used too, now its just all about garbage like some rims or a chain that cost more than a mounths salery for most people, how are we supposed to relate to that, i dont care about that garbage, i like real stuff, like underground rap, i dont know if you ever heard of royce da 59, but he talks about lifes issues and has some real street cred, that is actually educational to the listeners instead of encouraging stupidity, i only like a few mainstream artist nowadys.

I dont even listen to the radio anymore unless its like an 80s and old school day or something.

Let's face it, music in the past 7-8 years has been pretty lackluster, and this isn't just covering hip-hop, it is almost all genres that are popular in the United States. Apart from some underground, there hasn't been any music lately that has really gotten me excited or has put a smile on my face. I mostly listen to music from the 90s and before because it was more real. The music scene has really taken a downfall in the US since about the mid 90s or so.

The scene these days is obviously fake and many people are too stupid to realize that there is better stuff out there. Your probably not going to find it on Myspace, the radio, or on MTV. You just have to search for it.

A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Kid n' Play, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, and even 2Pac were good. All those groups and rappers are good examples of real hip-hop, stuff that sounds better and has more of that energetic feel. 50 Cent, Akon, Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Young Jeezy, please. A bunch of gorillas screaming about how much money they've wasted and how they talk about their rims and other bullcrap.

Because nobody tries to see past the mainstream stuff, yes mainstream music kanye, beiber, katy perry, etc does suck, but that's because it's the only music out there that has enough money to constantly be overplayed on radio and television, there are many good artists today but it disappoints the shitty pop music is played enough to make people think all music today sucks. Today it's just faster and easier for the majority of people to express and spread their opinions on modern music and that's all that is seen. There was terrible music back then as well but nowdays it's far easier for the majority of people who don't like certain music to express it to the point where everyone thinks music nowdays is going to **** and it really isn't. Take time to explore the full range of music out there

Lowest Common Denominator = Greatest Potential Sales = Least Creative Product.

Record companies would rather create a product that appeals a little bit to a lot of people than one that only a handful of listeners will be really passionate about.

Record companies want to sell lots of records, not create great ones. So the good stuff, the stuff you either love or hate, the stuff that'll still be listened to in 30 years, never gets a shot at mainstream success. Instead, every time a really novel song gets made that becomes popular, the record companies just try to rip off the sound. Guns & Roses did "Welcome to the Jungle" and - blammo - Motley Crue releases "Dr. Feelgood". Okay, bad example, but you get the idea.

    1. Yeah, Soulja Boy sucks, the only reason that song is popular is because it's "catchy." It's just a whole chorus, that's it. No attempt at real songwriting. And yeah, kids are lucky no one can understand that idiot, cause Supermaning a hoe is kinda gross.

    2. As for the whole deal with mainstream music sucking, it's because with CD sales down due to music being downloaded, companies are forcing artists to produce the same sounding crap that is already on the radio. No one wants to risk losing money by going out on a limb and taking a chance on something that may or may not sell, because no one knows how something unique will go over.

    a) I haven't heard ANY real Emo on the radio (Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty).

    b) The radio is there for the masses and most people are extremely stupid. And easily pleased.

    c) Some of the great underground music is just so different from the mainstream that some people just can't understand it and must acquire a taste for it. But that would require work. And brains. That which, most people lack.

It doesn't suck to the larger market of young kids and a lot of younger teens, hence why it is mainstream and the most profitable for record companies.

The same kids will grow up to have tastes possibly similar to you as their ear develops, but at one time they make up the majority - then divide as they get older as to what type of music they move on to. It's just human musical evolution.

Other types of music pull in more select crowds so tend to be catered for at lower levels but based on the passion of their fanbases are still successful in the channels they are marketed through.

If it bugs you, listen to other radio stations or music channels - they often rarely play what you want to hear but for every 200 kids wanting Rhianna of other such pap, there's 9 or 10 wanting Electro or Metal, if you get my drift. That's why...

To record/cut an album and have it circulated you need MONEY... and loads of it...

The people who do this expect to not only get a return on their investment but to make $$$$$$$$$$$... So their preconcieved ideas of what will do this for them is what drives the industry en masse.

However true talent can be hidden amoungst the masses due their desire to stay true to themselves and their art. Not to distort their sound/lyrics/feel for the sake of the investment hence their music stays small except from those who appreciate it and hunt it down...

To quote The Proclaimers "what happens when minority means you?" - Lived most of my life in the minority and loving it!!!

Source(s): My borther is a talented singer/song writer who in the 80s didn't compromise himself or his art and consequently is still mostly unknown!

ive heard of soulja boy but ive never heard his music. music on the radio doesnt have substance anymore unless im listening to classic rock or oldies. Video killed the radio star. Everyone on the radio is only on the radio because they are pretty enough for tv. I like listening to the lesser known good stuff in circulation.

Its so commercialized now. The internet and being able to download songs quickly has something to do with this. A song used to stay around on the radio, if it was hot for at least two months. Its all to them about keepin it fresh but fresh to me, sounds not so fresh. Stick with your underground. Oh, and this goes to other genres than hip hop as well.
