Is this aggressive behavior or just normal play? I have a 5 month old Boston Terrier and sometimes I let him?

chase me around the house and when we stop he jumps up and barks and growls. Is this normal play or is it aggressive behavior that I shouldn't allow? I love it, and he absolutely respects me and my wife as the alphas, but I don't want to encourage aggressiveness. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I have a Boston and we do the same thing. He loves to chase me around the house. He isn't much of a barker or growler though. As long as he is not growling in aggression towards you, and just being playful that is just fine.

My BT wears me out almost every day! Great dogs:)

It sounds normal as he wants to keep on playing. You would be able to tell the difference between the playing and aggressive growl. The aggressive growl is more deeper. Hope it helps and have a great life with your new addition. Dogs are a great companion and you never get bored when you have them around.

He's having a great time! Growl back at him and grab him by the sides of the head (gently of course) and shake his head back and forth. Then push him back. He will come back for more. Every once in a while get him down on his back and gently pull him around on a slick surface, like the linoleum in the kitchen, he may love that too. Dogs are "in" to a lot of different play games, as long as they are not hurt or frightened by them. Good luck and Good fun! Nana

I have a Boston that growls when he plays tug-o-war with me. It's his favorite toy. He has been doing this for 8 years. He is just having fun. As long as he stops the minute you stop the game, then everything is fine. Bostons just love these kind of games, but they are the sweetest dog around. I bet your loves to give kisses on your face too.

I thinhk it is fine if you and he are having fun. But to check, next time he jumps and growls, make him sit and stay. Give him a command to listen to and see if he does it. If he doesn't, yes he is being aggressive.

Your dog should ALWAYS listen to you!

My little dog growled at me last night when I tried to take his bone from him. I made him spit it out and took it from him for a good 5 minutes. Then I gave it back to him and waited a minute or two and reached to take it again. He let me do it that time.

Always show that you are the boss.

It is hard to say definitely with out seeing the behavior but it sounds like play, and is fun but he will grow, when he is full grown what will he weigh? do you ( and your wife ) want that much dog hanging off the back of your ankles? one last thing to consider is the danger to small children running and playing with the dog they may not find your game so fun.

remember all good things come from sit

Denise G has is right, if it's all fun and games find out by giving a command, and just like they said if they don't listen then you have a problem.

  • definitely normal behavior, he just wants you to keep playing with him.

The key is does he stop when you tell him to stop!
