Adults: 18-25.Have you ever been in a retail store you didnt work at, and had a customer insist you help them?

Even though you didn't work there. This aggravates me more than any other form of discrimination. Just because I'm young doesn't make me your slave. In fact, in most cases I make more money than those who ask. And yet they get angry. I even had a guy at a golf course try to get me fired. And i didn't even work there. Then the course manager told me that if "I didn't change my attitude with the members, i would be fired." I had never met this guy and he had the gaul to try to fire me. He didn't even know that I wasn't an employee. And it was all because I'm twenty three and look rather young. Have any old men ever had a kid ask them to carry their bag and offer them a two dollar tip? Would you be insulted too? This has happened to me twice since Christmas, and at least ten times this year. Are people really that presumptuous that they would make presumptions based upon my age in this world. Or are they just that ignorant? Has this happened to you in any way shape or form? HOW?

I actually had that happen to me at Best Buy once. An older lady came up to me and I happened to be wearing a blue shirt close to the color (but not quite the same) of their employees, so I can certainly understand the mistake, but when I told the lady I didn't work there, she didn't believe me, and went and found a manager. The guy was either new and didn't know people well yet, or he was a complete idiot, because he actually came up to me and started chewing me out.

What really amuses me now that I can look back on it and laugh, is that I was all ready to purchase a new computer system. Easily a $1200 sale. And I told him so, and then walked out the door. Oh, wow, was I ever pissed at the time.

Circuit City got my money that day. XD

I have had that problem. I generally now just give everyone that 'look' that says I am not very personable. More people will talk to you the more personable you look. Sometimes if they just look totally confused I will try to help, other times I just look at them and tell them 'sorry I dont work here' and keep going so they dont have time to object.

When I need help, I always ask 'do you work here' if I am unsure.

  • I work in a well known clothing store and I have seen that happen with my customers many times. Usually, when I see that, I always interject and say "I work here. What do you need?" End of problem.

If a customer thinks you are an employee, just say nicely "I'm sorry, I do not work here."

All you have to say is " I dont work here"

and if the manager came up to me , i would threaten him and tell him that you are not his employee but rather his customer and if he wants your service he better stop.

I dont think its because your young, it may also be because you dress well or like what the store offers.

People sometimes ask me for advice on what they are going to buy, but I dont think that means they are confusing me with a salesgirl.

I do think you are taking this too seriously, but then again, it happens to you often.

I had something similar happen to me, I used to work at Penney's and one day I was at Sears on my break and this lady insisted that I help her. I told her I didn't work there and went on about my business. The crazy thing is that she came to Penney's and reported me! I told my manager what really happened and she laughed at me for a week every time she saw me.

i once had a pimple-face manager at a store come and tell me there was an accident in the bathroom that needed to be cleaned up 'pronto as in asap as in NOW!!!!'. I told him I didn't work there and he said 'That's right, if you don't get it mopped up NOW!!!' I was so wishing I had been the one to make the mess.

No, I get a completely different response from people. I'm nineteen, and people always want to treat me like a child, because I look younger.

I'm older than your age outline (37) but, I still get that once in a while.

I enjoy sending them on a wild goose chase. I'm easily amused.

That is insulting.Just give them a funny look and walk away. They can't get you fired if you don't work there. If they get rude with you, go to the manager and tell him this person is bothering you.You don't have to take that from anybody. You have rights too!

I think you should politely say "I don't work here" and get on with your life. You're taking this too much to heart.
