Does the Democratic party represent the poor? And Republican the rich?
I started wondering about that after reading someone else's question and realizing that all the really wealthy people I've ever known were Democrats.
When I looked it up I found this article, with some interesting findings like:
"If you take the wealthiest one-third of the 435 congressional districts, we found that the Democrats represent about 58 percent of those jurisdictions,"
the majority of the nation's wealthiest congressional jurisdictions were represented by Democrats.
He also found that more than half of the wealthiest households were concentrated in the 18 states where Democrats hold both Senate seats.

There's an old political saying that goes,"If you want to live like a Republican, Vote Democratic ", and that kinda sums it up.
As you noted, there are many wealthy Democrats, and I think you will find those people at the forefront of community service, local initiatives to aid the poor, and similar pursuits.
Even those polls that say that Republicans give more to charity, miss a basic fact, and that is that most of these charities are run, often for free, by liberal Republicans, or, mostly, Democrats.

I think that none of the 'stats' are related. It is a fact that the GOP, at least since the 1920's, has always been a friend of corporations and the well off. The difference between the GOP 'then' and 'now' however is striking. The Republican party of Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford wasn't the enemy of unions, women, and minorities. Since the Reagan era, the GOP has been totally taken over by trans-national corporations, the Oil Mafia in particular and the Christian right. The Bush administration has never adopted 'racism', but it has uses the services of right wing talk radio to demonize the 'liberals' and gays....a useful subsitute. For their part, the democrats, since the 70's, have been politically where the Eisenhower Republicans used to be....a bit more @ss kissing toward the corporations, a bit less chummy with labor. The latest incarnation of the Democratic party, at least as illustrated by Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton, seems to be moving back to the era where the party favored the fortunes of the American wage-earner. Good wages and honest work imbedded in a thriving economy where rising levels of national production were shared with the 'working class' was always the democratic cure for poverty. Starting in the 1960s this idea of good wages and a strong social safety net was met by a 'bah-humbug' attitude by the Goldwater republicans, leading to the Reagan era and now the Bush semi-fascisti model of a national economy. So there!

You are pretty much right on target. The Trade Unions have a record of supporting Democrats, but the workers do not always hold the line. Movie Stars are Rich but support Democrats. University Professors are not poor, but they support Democrats. Born again Evangelicals may be poor but they vote Republican.

That sounds about right. This is just a guess but it's the way I feel. The democrats are for socialization, like more welfare, more handouts, more social programs, more regulations. In the end the very people they try to help become dependent on the government that's payed for by the middle class who tend to vote for democrats for more social programs most of the time. It's a vicious circle. A hundred years ago most people were self sufficient, responsible and believed in hard work and saving, and fought to protect their land, property and families (no taxes to drain your income). Taxes make the government richer and feeds the trough for the policians and there business associates. Since democrats usually want bigger government it makes democrats with government connections make the most money.

So, are you describing party platforms or the people who support them. This is why I vote the Democratic platform ...because IT supports middle class and poor. Obviously, rich Democrats agree with the platform...otherwise, they'd be Republicans. I think of people like the Kennedys who were sincere in believing the Democrat platform, as evidenced by so many of them involved in philanthropic endeavors.

The democrats pander to the poor, but deliver to the rich elitists. True conservative republicans are for every American. They aren't class specific like the democrats.
And those rich elitist liberals have tax shelters or off shore accounts that don't get hit by the tax increases democrats support. It comes from the middle and upper middle class Americans.
It's good to see you've found the truth, that the democrats don't want many people knowing.

Nobody represents the poor or working class in America. Both parties represent the upper middle class, and Republicans represent the rich.

Truly, there are a lot of liberal rich people and a lot of poor people who vote for people who want to cut taxes on the rich and deny benefits to the poor. Go Figure.

That's what Dems want you to think. They go forward under the guise of 'being for the little guy', but want to tax everyone to death to fund more programs for the governmant to control! And for those that are poverty level and don't pay taxes, they want to keep expanding programs that give them more entitlements so that the poor will keep voting them into office! It's pretty transparent.

Only in the minds of far left Dems.
