Kindergarten handwriting question?
My youngest daughter will be 5 next month and start kindergarten in the fall. I am concerned about her with handwriting. She has always eaten with her left hand, so I assumed she'd be left handed. I am left handed and my son is left handed and my other 3 girls are right handed.
Well the thing is, I'm not sure what hand she writes with because lately she has finally taken an interest in writing and can actually write her name really well, but she uses her right hand. So I'm a little bit confused on what hand she would be best at. I don't want to force her into one hand or the other, but just want her to be comfortable writing. My mother hated that I was left handed and tried to force right handed on me, so I definitely want her to make the choice you know.
Are there any tests I can do at home to figure out what hand she writes with? Is there anything I can do to help prepare her more for Kindergarten? I didn't have this issue with my other kids. Thanks!
Also I don't want a teacher deciding for her either! I had issues with teachers when I was in school over me being left handed.

I am a kindergarten teacher and handwriting is a big issue. I have seen lefties and righties for many years. To me whatever hand your child is most comfortable with is the hand she should be writing with. I do not force my students to write with a particular hand. One way to figure out what hand she likes best is to offer a pencil, whatever hand she grabs with and starts writing with is her dominate hand.
As for preparing her for kinder, you are doing a great job. Buy handwriting paper and start showing her how to correctly write between the lines. I highly recommend buying the dvd," The letter factory," by leapfrog. It is such a great learning tool. It teaches letter names, and sounds, which is the foundation for phonics. Also start talking about enviromental print. Start asking her things like what letter does Mcdonald's start with? Practice counting objects with her so she gets that one to one correspondence down, and most importantly, read to her! I can tell which kids in my class that have parents that read to them.

Perhaps she's ambidexterous. It's not uncommon. I know many people who switch hands to write with and then do other things with. My son is right handed, but he bats left handed. My sister is left handed, but she cuts with scissors and eats right handed. Just let your child develop naturally. Don't push the issue. I think your repressed fears and memories of being a lefty are coming out. As you know there are now many more products for left handed people.

I would say whatever she is doing on her own is what is best. She wouldn't be using her right if it weren't comfortable. Some kids do some things with their left and some with their right. I have 3 boys who are right handed and my youngest is left handed.

You answered your own question. If she write fairly well with her right hand then she is a righty. BUT righty's do a lot of stuff with their left hands just like leftys do a lot with their right hand. Just let her right however she is comfortable.
Also she may end up being ambidextrous. Bottom line is don't stress about it, she will write how she writes!

I am left handed adn the only lefty in my entire family. the only other lefty in the family was my grandfather but he was amidextrious. also weird fact that 2500 deaths each year are from left handed people using tools used for right handed people. I saw that on the discovery channel a few days ago. weird.

I think that you have already done the test if she picks up with the right hand. If she eats with the left, let her be with the left. You never know, she may end up being ambidextrous!

I agree with Yummy mummy, the K teacher. You should have known from about two years of age when she first was picking up crayons to scribble with! If it's her right, so it is. Don't do the reverse and force her into being left-handed!

I eat with my left hand and write with my right. Your daughter will do what is natural for her. If she is coloring, drawing, and writing her name with her right hand she could very well be ambidextrous.

Well
I write with my left hand
I kick with both legs
I eat with both hands

she will use what is comfortable and fits for her
not to worry
maybe she will be ambidexterous
And I agree with you....don;t let anyone try to change her
If i were you i would not pay so much attention to it either as she will pick up on your anxiety
just let her be! ;0)
