How do you get a 5 year old boy to overcome a fear of pooping because of pain?

He refuses to eat to the point of emaciation, and has bowel movements only once a week if lucky. The stool is incredibly hard and the size of rabbit droppings. Nothing works. His fear of pain is so great he works himself up into a frenzy of panic when he knows it's coming. Please help! He fears suppositories as well.

Update:

The foods and liquids associated with making bowel movements easier are near impossible to get him to eat. He hates raisins, won't drink prune juice.. We have been to a doctor, but have only been given same advice. Stool softeners, suppositories, and "get him to eat"... But the underlying issue of fear of pooping is not addressed. Let me spedify, this is not a diaper issue. He has had an intense fear of pooping almost since birth. He goes into kindergarten this fall, and NO progress has been made with this issue.

If it hurting him to poop. The something is going on. My three year having hard time pooping since he was two year old. But the doctor give him something to soften his stool so it wouldn't hurt. If then if his stools are like rabbit kind. It time to talk to his doctor about this. Then they might want test or they would give him something for it. I would make him drink juice apple or prune juice that will soften it up and it might be easy on him..

The only thing i can suggest is cut down on milk (no more than half a pint to a pint a day) as this can bung him up. Give him more fruit juices and more fruit to eat. This will help loosen things up then when he does go (which he will have to) he will see that it doesnt hurt. The more you try to pressure him the more scared he will become so let him get on with it in his own time. The lack of eating is a concern and should be consulted with a doctor.

My niece turned 5 in Dec. And only just last year sometime...(while she was 4)...She would only poop in a pull up because she said it hurt. She now is a big potty girl.

I would say WATER then you need to have him eat fruit/ drink fruit (if he's anti vegitable) juice..mix a little prune juice in with his fav. fruit juice...apple, grape what ever...just like in adults...too much fruit will make you poop. Try giving him yummy things like those go-gurt yogurt pops...you can freeze them they are so good. Yogurt has natural bacterial cultures to help with healthy digestive system.

He's definately dehydrated if he's having rabbit poops. Talk him into eating these things tell him it helps his tummy feel better. I'm sure he's probably going to get hemerroids from pooping such hard poops.(that's probably the pain he's having)

First off, if you get him to drink alot more water or juice you will have less problems, Since there is fear associated with pain, you need to show him the facts, show him how the human body works on the web and show him how to "fix" his body so there will be no more pain, by eating the right foods, to which you can make fun for him...and drinking water more...even if it is in koolaid...dont make this hard or bad, make it a way out and way to heal....even 5 year olds are smart enough to get this although alot of adults dont. Read to him the results of your looking up why people have poo that is hard and not soft and how to correct that, when he sees he is not alone and people have gotten over it..his fear stops and he wants to get over it too...if he thinks he can make his poo soft he will realize it wont hurt as bad or at all and will be more willing to try. You need to make him realize the human body has to poo to get rid of the toxins, he is at the stage that you need to make him realize he is a brave boy to go thru what he does but you have found how to make it better...then teach him and get alot more water down him and when you need to put some of the clear metimucel in it when he doesnt see it or put it in some juice he does like, he doesnt HAVE to see the medicine to help him and QUIT making it such a big deal TO him, change his frame of mind to making it better instead of being afraid of the pain, let him have some tylnol before he is close to going and tell him it is a magic pill that will help stop the pain..so he will at least try...you may have to fib a bit to help him to see...children avoid pain unless it is worth it...try to write a story of a little boy with the same problems in the form of story about giants or dragons or whatever he likes and telling the story that helps show him you can get over this, that he doesnt have to feel pain and hurt to go poo...if you want I will write him a story to help, you can email me at rowdysunsetart@yahoo.com if you would like...get to his level to help him help himself...this will most certainly help.

he might be constipated because of dehydration talk to a doctor who might prescribe something to help soften the stool and work on building up his fluids it might take a couple weeks of a lot of water and juice to see a difference

also only eating watery food like soup and jello

because his stool are so infrequent and his is trying to avoid the pain he might be holding it in and causing himself damage to his intestine if that is whats happening he might require an enema to help get it all out

i had a friend who needed that was in the hospital for 2 days

ultimately this is something for a doctor to evaulate

i would fear suppositories let alone a 5 year old boy. i guess you have taken him to the doctor for advise, he needs to drink plenty, and then he wont be so dehydrated and his stools will not be as hard,
