My son swallowed a small battery?

I don't know why he even had it in his month, but my son swallowed a small button-type, watch battery about the size of a nickel. He is with my husband, still waiting to be seen in the ER . He is in no pain, just really bored. Do you have any suggestions or advice?

Update:

He is 7 yrs old, and just had tubes put in his ears and adnoids (sp) removed 4 days ago. He was very scared about going to the hospital again.

Update 2:

skaizun, LOL!! I am at home with my other children while my husband is at the hospital with my son. No wireless laptop here. They are still waiting to be seen.

Update 3:

Well, 5 hours later he finally had an x-ray. The battery has moved to the colin and is expected to pass on through. Thank you for your concerns. I had called the Poison Control to let them know. She said the biggest concern was that the battery not get lodged or stuck in the esophagus. In most cases the batteries due tend to pass through with no trouble. The nurse did recommend a stool softener.

Update 4:

I don't think I will be looking for the battery upon return. LOL! At least not inquisitivly.

However, a couple of years ago my daughter swallowed a hair pin while at school. I saw the x-ray of it with the hair pin in her stomach. What a sight. And fortunately, that came out just fine. She said she saw in the toilet a couple of days later. lol

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv/ and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

I'm more stunned by the image of you sitting, presumably at home typing this question! (you said, "(son) is with my husband...in the ER; why aren't YOU there?!?!?)

Regardless, unless the battery was cut open (difficult to do by a child), exposing the potentially dangerous chemicals on the inside, then you have nothing to worry about (it's not unlike swallowing a coin), and the ER attendants will probably just send him home with a recommendation to contact your regular physician the next day. At worst, your son will experience a minor stomach ache, and, as the saying goes, "this, too, shall pass". ;)

If you think your son swallowed a battery then you should go to the ER and get him checked up. Better safe than sorry.

Um did scarlett really just say this?

    5) Watch the stools until the battery has passed. Clean the battery, tape it to a card or wrap it carefully, and mail it to:

    National Capital Poison Center

3201 New Mexico Ave, Suite 310

    Washington, DC 20016

Be sure to include your name, address and telephone number. To learn more about battery ingestions, a toxicologist analyzes each battery and correlates the severity of the patient’s clinical effects with the degree of corrosion noted on the battery.

You think that they should mail the battery this kids s h i ts out to the national poison control center??? WTF??

You were right to take him to the ER. Most likely the doctor will say that the battery should pass through and come out with the child's stool.

This type of battery is enclosed in plated metal and is airtight. It likely will be eliminated without harm to your son in 12 to 16 hours. Let n nature take it's course and relax.

those batteries are pretty well sealed, as they are used often in underwater equipment. I am sure they will give him a little something to help the battery pass more quickly. The questions is, are you going to look for it? lol

    Good luck ;-)
