Homeopathic/Herbal Remedy for Anxiety?

I have occasional bouts of anxiety that can be triggered by situations that are unfamiliar to me, pms, & insomnia. I've tried prescriptions (ativan, xanax) but I've just moved, & understandably, my new doc (psychiatrist) isn't real gung-ho on just dosing a controlled substance. My insomnia (it's a circle - I'm thinking too much, can't fall asleep, brain goes into over-drive, still can't sleep, then I start getting anxious & around 3am I'm crabby & tired & unable to sleep) I've tried Lunesta, Rozerem, & Ambien to no avail. Stronger drugs work; but I wake up so tired/hung-over. Melatonin gives me nightmares. Searching on the internet, I read about 2 homeopathic remedies... arsenicum album & lycopodium. Does anyone know anything about these guys? Can they be taken together? How should they be dosed? Etc? I *don't* want to get high, I don't want to "escape"... I just want something that works & not something to take every day/several times a day -- only when needed & a few doses are ok.

Update:

What about GABA? What is it and how does it work? I promise to reward for best answer... please, lots of details. Thank you and All the Best!

if i have an anxiety attack i usually take something called Dr Bach. it's a natural flower remedy that will for sure calm you down. my father passed away when i was little and to cope with everything we all took the stuff and it REALLY calms you down. you can only get it at healthfood stores not chemists (i don't think) and it comes in a spray or drop form. it actually tastes really good lol. you don't have to take it all the time, just as you need it but unfortunately there isn't some magical cure that you can take once a week!! i actually have the same sort of thing as you. i never get to sleep and i over think way to much!!!! maybe see a counsellor about your problems and i REALLY hope you feel much better!!!!! good luck!!!!

Gaba does not cross the brain barrier so probably would not be very effective for anxiety. Passiflora (passionflower), and valerian seems to work very well for many people and are useful for sleep problems as well. I find that for me, taking magnesium with these herbs works as a sort of booster effect . It has some relaxant property as well. The web site for Swanson Herbal products has some really good herbal remedies and reviews of many herbs that might help you and will give an overview of the first two herbs you asked about. They also have really good prices. I am in no way affliated with this company- I've just found them to be good for info and good products.

Have you tried Acupuncture? I also would suggest that you remove all stimulants from your diet. Quit coffee, avoid alcohol (totally) this may be hard for some but just until you start to sleep better than go back with moderation. Sometimes if you try too many different herbals than your body actually eliminates them too quickly and they fail to get absorbed into your system. Do a little detox before trying a new remedy.

Kava worked for me and I just take this when stress starts to strangle me. Sometimes I go a week without it and then other times I become a monster and look like a zombie without adequate sleep. Have you thought about meditation?

Relaxing cd's are sometimes helpful to nod off to.

I wouldn't suggest pot. This keeps your head buzzing.

Heard about PureCalm? It's a standardized herbal remedy formula you can use every time anxiety or panic attacks set in. It could also treat restlessness and irritability. No don't take those pills. Be wary of its behavioral and physiological side effects.

PureCalm is formulated with the therapeutic extracts of Passion Flower, Lavandula Augustifolia and Melissa Officinalis. Surely, its herbal ingredients would work in synergy to soothe frayed nerves and treat underlying disorders that might be triggering anxiety.

Find a hypnotist who uses the 5-PATH method of hypnosis. They will help you find what's causing the anxiety and insomnia and help you fix it.
