Whiter than white linen - laundry tips please?
I go to great lengths when doing laundry. All whites are washed separately, never put out in the sun (tumble dried) and never ironed. Sheets are washed every week without fail. However, I notice that my cotton/polyester (60:40) sheets have a developed a dull colour and are not crisp white anymore. I have tried adding bleach to the washing process, but see no improvement.
My Tshirts are still a very crisp white, in spite of some of them being 5 years old.
Please can anyone help me, as I am very very fastidious about my washing. Actually, I think I border on obsession with my laundry. I doubt, however, that this will give me a mental breakdown although I am starting to have sleepless moments. (Tongue in cheek).
Thanks to you all and happy washing!!!!

Try bluing. It's an old-fashioned solution: http://www.mrsstewart.com/

I wore white for over 6 years everyday while I went to med-school in Mexico.
Try a bar of soap called "ZOTE" you can get it at Target or walmart for under a buck.
Take a cheese grater and grate it into your washer and run it with the hottest water possible. You can add a very small splash of Clorox Advantage (or how ever it's called now), the "splashless" thick kind.
I would not do this everytime, but maybe once a month or so to bring back the brightness.
In my opinion, this works better than oxyclean.
I also have friends that said they used pine cleaner, they soak it in water with the cleaner, and then laid them flat and sprinkled corn starch on them. The corn starch would then suck up the liquid (pine and water) taking the "yelowish" color out of the fabrics. This works especially well with polyester and polyester blends. This I never personally tried but some colegues swear by it.

Bleach will damage whites over time. They will turn yellow or gray. I've heard that drying in the sun will brighten whites.
I use "Shout" and "OxiClean" and I never use bleach. Try using a bluing agent. I use "Mrs. Stewart's" brand. This will restore your whites (unless there is bleach damage, then nothing can bring them back). Make sure you dissolve the bluing agent in your wash water before you add the laundry.
"Rit" dye also makes a whitener.

I daresay someone has already told you this but you need to 'blue' the wash. You can buy it at any hardware stores. It brings white washing up to a crisp blue-white which makes the linen look new. Try it.

Use Vanish crystal white in your wash. It really does work!
Only ever use an oxygenating bleach, never chlorine bleach.
