How are steps in awareness realized or made manifest?
People on the path know they are not soley their body, or not their ego. They recognize the source of themselves, this happens when they awaken - when they see themselves as source. So one would think this awakening is enough, to stay fully alert and aware forever after. Yet, one finds out that this is only the beginning to be the observer, then there follows much work needed to be done with questioning what one observes and continuing on with the question: "Who Am I?" Then it happens that revelations and insights continue to be revealed as one continues with one's meditative work, and one's perspective changes after each one. One starts to realize it's a growing process. But how 'exactly' does this change in gains of awareness happen? Is it a change in the body? Is it a change in the source? Where is it stored? Why is it permanent? Where and how is it realized? If one's essential nature is awareness, then how come one isn't fully aware immediately and permanently? Why does it fade?
docjp: I agree with you, that's its a process of transmutation as you describe. I would say it as energy which was locked up in personality is released back as free awareness, and it's a slow and gradual process to dissolve that. But it still leaves the question of what happens to this released energy? We are in a body right? What I think about is a person I know with high level of realization, and then what I observe is that with aging and decreasing agility/health, etc., in the body, that this person's momentary ability to be aware is reduced. this also happens when one is sick or not feeling well. So I see all living systems as both body and spirit. Somehow the body itself must be related to ability to realize awareness, as it changes.
They say that every 7 years the body is totally remade. So then I think that whatever free energy one has in one's body, how the energy is distributed and being used, then is the source behind what that body will look like. If one is in a strong growing such as from birth to about age 26, then one is changing rapidly physically. After that then this growing appears to be stagnating in the structure of personality, one is holding it there, and then also one appears to be aging. I like to think about things like this. That's all.

It helps me to imagine a ladder, and each step taken upon it opens a new vista of sight and understanding. But no matter how high one climbs, one has to come down again to eat, sleep and do other necessary things.
What one observed [and seemingly knew while observing] on some elevated rung seems to disappear as one climbs down again. But as one operates in ones day, one subtly notices a slight reduction in ones reactions to people, places, and things. A bit less anger, a bit less hostility, etc.
It took who knows how many lifetimes for us to become who our MINDs believe us to be. It will take time and effort [in climbing ever higher] for us to realize that everything our MINDs believe is false.... if this happened suddenly, we would be unable to even operate on this physical plane.
The change we can perceive is a subtle change as some "bit" of dissociated Apapsyche [Operational Energy of ones Soul] is returned to ones Apapsyche from ones MIND where it had been stuck as some misperceived bit of early trauma.
As these dissociated bits of Apapsyche return to ones Apapsyche per se, they bring with them the accumulated Knowledge and empathic understanding we have acquired
over lifetimes of Karma. I refer to this process as the Esotransmutation Process, and it is the result of all the Esoteric realms within oneself cooperating to produce ones Spiritual evolution... which is fully an inside job and quite unknown to oneself.
One cannot push the river... one must ultimately sit in ones innertube and float along with the river. If one wants to paddle to keep ones tube straight, that helps.

All it is is a change in perspective. Not a growing process but a procession of changes in perspective until one realizes all these are possible at any given time.
The meditative community gets lost in this analytical silliness of "how far have I come?" and "how much farther must I go?" as if there is ever any end or ever was a "destination". If it has come to this point with you perhaps the practice is now getting in the way of realization.
Where is what stored?..you are it.
One is fully aware immediately and always now.
"It" ( your awareness?) seems to fade because we become distracted by thought and stop paying attention to now. But does it fade or do you focus in on an illusion and yet again forget who you are?
As long as you are seeing "it" and not I you will not see the truth.

I can say for sure an enlightened person is always in constant awareness. Those who are int the spiritual progression are the ones who are not costant all the while.
Awareness is when you are with the source, that is the super conscious. The change is only in the mind.If you are very watchful as to what is happening to the mind , then you will find the difference.
you will find the you are going deep from the normal conscious mind[peripheral] mind to the sub conscious then to the state where you are thoughtless. you cannot be thoughtless when you are wide awake, but you will feel very relaxed & very calm. But you will be able to go now & then even when you are conscious. That is sahaja nishtai. Can you understand the word?
Awareness[super conscious] is not stored. It is everywhere & that is why the whole universe is alive. There is no change in the awareness. Only the person in spiritual progression will find a change in his awarenss.

Awareness of being is conditioned out of us during early development before the massive thinking brain begins to come on-line at about seven (completed around age 25). The intense defining moments of childhood are embedded at the cellular level and this electrochemistry affects our EM field, which in turn affects our electrochemistry and around and around we go. We are essentially dealing with the intersection of biology, psychology and physics.
The more we are capable of transcending or eliminating the conditioned ego identity with its subconscious beliefs - which control perception, beliefs, feelings and reactions - the less conflicted we become and the fewer interference patterns our EM field generates. Ultimately, conscious choice is causal/creative.
Regarding stages, the first stage is the awakening, the second stage is purification of the ego identity which usually requires self-discipline through meditation and contemplation. The third stage, illumination, is one reached by artists and visionaries as well as being the final stage of some mystics - a consciousness of a transcendent or divine order. The great adepts go beyond to a fourth stage which is often called the dark night of the soul - one of final and complete purification and often an experience of confusion, helplessness and a period of final "unselfing" and surrender to purpose. The last stage is one of union with the object of love, the one Reality - the self permanently stabilized on a transcendent level and liberated for a new purpose in the temporal order.

The growing processes might only be systematically visible in the forms of material knowledge, physical art or in the learning of new trades and skills to develop various desired abilities. In the matters of awareness of self, one might never realise that one is better now as opposed to a previous inferior self that a person once was. Once improved, one might find that all is changed to something so wholesome, completely and overwhelming that not a trace of regret, sorrow, sadness or sense of pride is left.
If you have been in love then you would understand that you do not remember your previous self in order to heighten your realisation of being blissfully in love, as true love suffices all emotion to give a person a new sense of being. But it is not possible even with love to trace as a logical path the way enhancement in awareness takes place, for at every stage, if there are any stages, or at a state of being aware along the way brings its own references, its own sense of meanings, a new sense to give to everything.
The sense and meanings of all physical forms may come and go, leaving behind all things amidst obscurities of lights and shades, certainties and doubts, perfection and imperfections all in a flow.
Then if there is no love in life, there is no way. There is no way to develop merely mentally or even spiritually, without love of a true nature. For love is the only thing that would not let go to things once found. This is all in the love of the One whom we come from and to whom we finally return.

For me it has been a few years of slow process when I was in deep despair over a death of a family member and then something made me aware in life then never before brought me temporary happiness and then I dropped deeper and darker than where I originally started!!! How my awareness grew for me was a sign from God he showed me the way and I have been reading tremendously so many different books and taking notes and writing in my journal it has helped me immensely as well as quality friends in my life :)))

One question at a time please.
Overload your brain with questions and all you'll get in return is a headache. There is no rush.
And the answer to the title-question is rational deduction.
