Earlier, I asked a question of Republicans. I asked, if McCain is the new face of the GOP, can they handle it? Most Republicans who answered my question said that no, they don't approve of the GOP following McCain's philosophies, and most of them said that the only reason they planned to vote for him is because they'd be voting against Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

So I think you've covered the reasons they're planning to vote for him. He is considered, apparently, too liberal to represent the Republican party, but the only other alternative was Romney, who evidently scares them because of his religious affiliation.

My reason is the war. No other issue is as important. Senator McCain is the only candidate running with the knowledge and experience to handle it. He was calling for a troop surge before the Secretary of Defense and the generals in the Pentagon even thought of it. He knows what he is doing. If we lose the war, no other issue will matter, western civilization will end.

A lot of people are tired of having a religious Republican in charge of the White House. Bush showed us where that can go horribly wrong. McCain is the only candidate (other than Guiliani, whose strategy failed, and Ron Paul) who is not putting a heavy focus on religion.

Furthermore, people are tired of being lied to by their president. McCain's "straight talk" appeals, where Mit Romney strikes many people as being like a snake-oil salesman - too smooth talking by far.

Beyond that, I'm sure many people are voting on the issues. Maybe they like his Iraq war stance. Maybe they like that he's fairly socially moderate. The vetoing all pork barrel spending is very appealing.

Because he is not a radical right winger.....conservatives are getting tired of of the intolerance of the the extreme right wing that has gained too much influence over the republican party in recent years. McCain is a very common sense conservative interested in solving problems rather than drawing social and political battle lines.

Isn't beating Hillary a good enough reason?

But I look at the candidates & pick the most fiscally conservative candidate available.

I would have rather voted for Rudy because he is a fiscal conservative & a social moderate.

The other reasons that I have heard from McCain supporters as to why they like him is that he campaigns on eliminating pork barrel spending and that he sticks to his guns and is not afraid to take hits from his own party just to stand up for what he believes in.
