What is wrong if my dog's tail sudenly went limp and she can't jump on her hind legs?
Within' the last two hours my dog who usually has her tail in the air and wagging suddenly had her tail go limp. It's between her legs. She is a Beagle, Springer Spaniel mix. She also tried to jump up on the couch and couldn't. It looked like she was in pain. Then we tried the ultimate test...we tried to give her a treat, no waggy tail, and she didn't jump up to get it when she usually turns around a few times. My boyfriend's rushing her the emergency vet, and I'm just here freaking out! Please help me and give me some kind of piece of mind, I'm so scared. The only things we can think of is her raw hide bone is backed up in her, or one of the cans of pureed pure pumpkin we mix with (just a spoon) her regular food was rancid. The vet recommended we give this to her. Again, please help as soon as possible...I don't know where to look for answers. I've had a lot of dogs in my day and never had one that suddenly had a tail go limp. YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED!
please keep all of your kind answers coming! They are really helping me keep my sanity over here. I will post an update once I find out what's going on with our baby girl Dezi.
wow, this is interesting....my frantic google searching has lead me to answers (with the help of all of you too)...I feel a little better. I think Dezi has what they call "cold water tail" aka "frozen tail", "limber tail". It is something hunting breads get (she's half Beagle) when they are in cold conditions thier tails suddenly go limp. My bfriend called and the vet said she didn't show any signs of pain, and said it's nothing to do with her anal area or legs. She's sending her home with pain meds and said if she doesn't get better in a couple days to take her to her regular vet. All the things on the web about "limber tail" say most vets didn't know about this....the guy that was writing about it on one site actually claimed he is a vet, it happened to his dog so he did a study on it. He nor any of his vet friends had ever heard about it....truly interesting. It seems exactly like what she has....ex rays will be the only thing that really calms me tough. THANKS AGAIN!!!

She could have injured herself when jumping on or off of something, could have pinched a nerve, had a stroke..don't know, but, The GOOD NEWS is, your boyfriend is rushing her to a VET! That is so refreshing to hear! Quick response to a sudden change in behavior as you described, is very important and you both did the very best thing by getting her to the emergency Vet. They should be able to tell you something very soon if they haven't already. I am sure they will take some X-Rays or do a scan of some sort, blood tests etc, and I hope you update us.

She may have sprained her tail or a leg or something else. It might be a hip problem. My dog jumped off the bed years ago and she sprained her neck. She did the same thing-tail down and she cried. She would not go near the bed and would not jump or wag her tail.
You will feel better when your bf gets back from the vet-that is exactly what we did-rushed her there.
I hope your dog feels better soon! I know how hard it is when they are hurting and we don't know why.

Did she fall or something fall on her? This sounds like a spinal injury maybe a pinched nerve. I sure do hope she is OK. I'll keep you in mind tonight. I'm sorry I can not be more help.

It seems like I have heard of that before. My dog did something like that once, but I don't remember what the deal was. Seems like it was something to do with a pinched nerve or something. She's fine now, but it took a couple of days to get back to her normal waggy self.
I hope the same is true with your dog.

She probably injured her back.If a dog injures a disc in their back,it will affect the nerves in the tail and rear legs.Your vet will probably do x-rays and give the dog steroids to reduce any inflammation. You will also have to keep the dog quiet.Sometimes ultrasound treatments or surgery is needed.

Could be hip dysplasia. Not sure if that is spelled right.
Do a google search on it. There is quite a lot of information.

Could be a pinched nerve.. Glad to hear that you are taking care of her by taking her to the emergency room.. That shows good ownership.. I hope she is ok..
