my sons cough will not go away?
the doctor says his lungs are clear, but he has this fluid sounding cough. It usually is worse after coming inside from cold weather, and upon getting up in the morning. This cough has been since November. I have tried over the counter medicine and she now has him on breathing treatments every four hours, which has not helped. What is going on?

If the breathing treatments are not working then you need to go further and see a pediatric pulmonologist. Most likely you son needs to have a 'burst' of prednisone which is a corticosteriod. This is different from an anabolic steriod as it doesn't build muscles just helps to reduce the swelling in the lungs. He may also need to be on a maintaince medication such as flovent, (another corticosteroid that is inhaled) but has no significant side effects. I recommend that once your son is recovered and stable he has a full set of pulmonary function tests performed to see what the severity of his asthma is and yes I do think that he has asthma. But remember that asthma is the number one most treatable condition that a child can have and that they can lead active normal lives. While no one really grows out of asthma you as a child develops and immunities are formed and the condition may attenuate or less in severity IF TREATED correctly at the beginning of symptoms. If it goes uptreated asthma will become worse as time goes on and slowly remodel the airways so that the disease becomes the master not the other way around. Also, make sure that your son has a recue inhaler and a spacing chamber on his person at all times until he is symptom free for at least 6 months. It is federal law that he can carry the inhaler in his pocket and not have to go to the school nurses office. Untreated asthma can and has killed. Make sure that the school if he is of age to attend is aware of his condition. For more information go to American Lung Association web site or the Wisconsin Asthma Coalition. I know that getting kids to bundle up is hard but reinforce it and hope for the best. Most hospitals and doctors offices have asthma educators that can help you with more information. You can also e-mail me if you wish. Good luck.

Sounds like it could be asthma, which the breathing treatments help with. If the breathing treatments aren't enough, let your doctor know. There are additional medications your child can be placed on to help if his current medication is not enough. Cough medicine will not usually help with this, so don't bother with it anymore. If you are not satisfied with your family doctor's efforts, request a referral to a pulmonologist (lung doctor).

my son gets the same way, he has asthma and when his flares up he never wheezes or has "bad" sounding lungs, they always sound clear BUT he coughs because of the bronchospasms he is having. When he gets like you described above, he always needs steroids along with the breathing treatments to get better.
