Question regarding British culture?

I've heard it said (I wish I could remember the attribution) that Americans really do not appreciate how ingrained the concept of class structure is in the British psyche. What is your opinion of the truth of this?

Yes. I am often struck by the differences in the ways in which we categorise people on either side of the Atlantic. We Brits attach a great deal of weight to the way in which people speak. We don't like people who are loud and vulgar. We are unimpressed by mere wealth. We are, on the other hand, impressed by intelligence and culture. A person could be in shabby, threadbare clothes and yet come over as belonging to a superior class of society by his bearing and demeanour and the way in which he speaks. Mere wealth can never turn anyone into a lady or gentleman.

It comes as a shock to encounter another point of view in North America, where people tend to be viewed as important simply because they have a lot of money and the underlying assumption that wealth places people in a superior class. There is such an assumption in the expression "the rich and famous". There is no reason why a rich person should be famous, but in the American perception of such things riches and fame appear to be linked together.

It really is true. As an American living in the UK, there are many things that just floor me, yet the British accept it as perfectly normal. I've had some great conversations about different traditions/norms/behaviors with my British friends. It does truly boggle ones mind some days.

The class structure is alive and well in the UK, believe me. I think Americans don't really understand the UK working class concept cos they have never seen them, only middle class actors on tv.

happy you asked this question,i'm hoping all our pals around the pond are being conscious of whats going on in the united kingdom. In in the present day's papers an indigenous white female became arrested and put in a police cellular because of the fact she walked out of a dialogue team in school because of the fact not one of the gang could or could talk English. She became arrested on a so stated as anti racial value. So it is going in this never pertains to terrorism yet shows the way how Brits are being taken care of in our own u . s ..i'm no longer a member of any political team in spite of the undeniable fact that it makes my blood boil.comments please.

Yes it is in ways you can't imagine. Being brought up strongly working class like me then going to a restaurant where they pour your drinks for you is enough to make me hide in the toilets.
