you pay a one time life time membership of $4000.00
you almost have to have a business to use directbuy

I answered a similar question the other day, here was my response:
While we have not personally used it, we have two good friends who have. Basically, you can negotiate the rate down to about $3500 for a multi-year membership. IF you are planning on spending upwards of $20k on home remodeling, building, or furnishing, you will likely see a return on your membership fee. If you do not plan on spending that much over the next few years, it's likely not a good idea, as you will not see a return on your investment in the membership.
One of our friends saved over $70,000 on cabinetry and fixtures alone for his new home....but he still spent about $150k there on those items. He was building a $2 million home, so he had a lot to buy, and his membership was worth every penny. He also bought new furnishings there, but I haven't ever inquired about the savings on those.
Another of our friends has saved quite a bit as well, and she swears by it. But again, they are a family with a lot of cash to spend and they have done quite a bit of remodeling.

I personally haven't used it, but a friend of my boss's has and he was in the office talking about it one day. Apparently, according to him, he pays $3000 a year for the membership and he gets all these things for a real big discount. It's worth it if you're doing a really big remodel on an expensive home. His house is about 1 mil and he re-did the whole kitchen (I mean whole kitchen) pool, bathrooms, a whole lot of stuff, so he saved a ton, but for the regular joe-shmo like me, it would be a waste.

I am a member of Direct Buy. I am getting ready to redo my kitchen, but I did buy a stove there last year and I did save a substantial amount of money. Sears had the same exact stove on sale, there sale price was substantially higher than what I paid at direct buy. I am a homeowner and as I said I am about to redo pretty much my whole house so I will save quite a bit. so for me it is definately worth it.

One of our friends has that membership and loves it, he's even offered us a few deals. We don't have lots o money though. He says good things about them and seems to always use them when he buys something for his house.
