Why do parents blame Hollywood for?

not setting good examples? They should be doing it themselves. There was a story on the ABC news website that was talking about how Miley Cyrus and her dad wer not wearing seatbelts in her new 3-D movie. A bunch of parents threw a fit. Sorry, but it is YOUR job to instill values, morals and common sense into your children, not Hollywood. People that blame Hollywood should not have kids because it seems like they are too lazy to do their own job!

Update:

Even my 3 year-old knows what is real and what isn't. I made a comment the other day about some character on TV and he turned around and said "That's not real", so young kid CAN tell the difference.

I have to totally agree with you on this one. Some parents like to point the finger at someone else because they know deep down inside that it's really their fault but want to make themselves feel better. It's like blaming the kids that you kids go out with because your son/daughter smokes or does drugs. It's all in the parenting.

Being a parent now is harder than ever I believe. While it is most definently the parent's job to instill values in their children, alot of things are getting thrown in the kids faces! Hollywood is RIGHT THERE all the time. You can take away TV, radio..ect. But the images will be on billboards and other kids will be talking about it.

I think it is frustrating when people who are "role models" to our children are doing stupid stuff. Kids are seeing and kids are doing.

It is then your job as a parent to step in again and use it as a teaching oppertunity. A time to explain what they are doing wrong, and even though they are "stars" they still make bad choices.

You can blame hollywood for putting it in your child's face, but you cannot blame them from how you handle it from that point onward.

I agree with the philosophy behind your thought to some degree, yes people need to be more involved in their children's lives and that actors and performers in general should not be held as role models for children. However, many of these young people are set up by their parent companies to be just that. Disney specifically creates these characters like Miley Cyrus and Mickey Mouse club to appeal to specific age groups. The problems is that until your about say 8 or 9 your ability to differentiate between a character and a person is somewhat limited. To some degree they understand that Miley Cyrus isn't Hannah Montana or even her other character on tv but they do believe the press releases, advertisements, clips and lyrics that Miley cyrus performs to be relative to who she is. They don't understand that some 40 year old white guy living in L.A. wrote what he thought a ten year old girl wants to hear her say/sing. They most certainly don't understand that who she is and the decisions she makes isn't always in line with what her "persona" put forward as her morals by her parent company. The problem really comes in when these people leave these jobs and try to become young adults. Their fans are still with them but usually any where from 3-7 years younger than they are. It just a reality that parents have to deal with the best we can, just like most other aspects of parenting. We certainly don't have the ability to control all aspects of our children's lives so access to this type of media to some degree is inevitable. There are no right answers what works for you and yours may not work for other people when it comes to raising children.

The only thing I blame Hollywood for is self-esteem issues in teens and young adults. There is no reason to cast movies set in high schools with all skinny, muscular, hot people because high schools have kids of all shapes, sizes and colors. There is no reason for everyone shopping in mall scenes to be perfect looking.because I have never been shopping at a place that only sold to model look-a-likes. That's the only thing I think is the medias fault when it comes to directly affecting our kids. How do you explain to your overweight child that she/he is beautiful when anytime you turn on the tv you see a skinny, fake, made up child saying this is what beauty is?

i agree with that all the way a movie is just that a movie and not real life and parents should be their child heroes if anything they should have used the movie as to show their child how they should wear seatbelts. i guess everything that happens in hollywood is hollywood fault. they watch a movie where someone smokes or goes over a cliff or something like that they still will complain.

saying that people who blame Hollywood should not have kids is a bit harsh.

If you ask me, the parents who freaked about the stupid Miley Cyrus movie need to quit being so over protective.

"oh no Miley wasn't wearing a seatbelt, that means my kids are never ever going to want to wear a seatbelt either."

I can almost hear them talking their kids ears off after the movie about wearing their seatbelt at ll times, driving the point home. Kids are not as stupid as people seem to think they are, they are NOT little sponges who soak up every little thing that they see on tv and recreate it.

I completely agree with you here. It's not Hollywood's job to raise our children, it's ours as parents. It's our jobs as parents to teach our children that Hollywood is not the standard life and to teach them good common sense and values. That whole thing Miley Cyrus was so out of line. Parents who say "oh no! she wasn't wearing her seat belt so my kids won't now!" need to pull their heads out of their butts. YOU teach your kids to put on their seat belts, not Miley Cyrus. YOU are the parent. If they say something like "but Miley wasn't wearing her seat belt" well then put the foot down! Common sense people.

You said it, my friend! Many parents these days don't want to take responsibility for their children. It's always the school's or "society's" responsibility to turn them into upstanding citizens. After all, the parents brought them into this world - do you mean they're expected to instill values in their kids, too?! Isn't it the responsibility of the strangers on TV to teach the kids?

    AMEN TO THAT!!!!

I can not stand it when parents blame everyone but themselves. Colombine for instence, Marilyn Manson did NOT tell those kids to go crazy and kill everyone!

You should know if your kids have issues and get them treated. You should tell your kids, yeah they were not wearing seatbelts and that is BAD, we wear ours at all times. Yes they are shooting people in this movie, it is just a movie, if you see a gun, tell an adult, do not touch it....

This is a topic that drives me crazy. Raise your kids right and they will be good kids. Do your best!!! If you have problems go to counseling!
