Is this a Double Standard?
It seems every time a woman hiccups seven new federal programs are initiated to study female hiccups. The accompanying link shows men commit suicide at a rate 4 times that of women, yet there isn't even a whisper in Congress. Would feminists be up in arms if the stats were reversed?
Tera; Way to go! So it is a double standard, and your post reflects that exactly. When men commit DV, we see a knee jerk reaction from fems and gov't. No discussion allowed as in women commit DV as often as men. When it comes to helping men, ya'll want to sit around and talk about it and hope it goes away. Admit it. If women wer as successful as men at suicide there would be a national feminist uproar as to why this was happenning, and there would be a study to find out how men were responsible for it.
mtfradga, your facts are right, your conclusion is insane, They don't want to spend money on male violence, they just want to throw men in prison! yet, again they spend billions on female "hiccups" . (this is a rant-example to minimize these studies. No such hiccup study exists that I know of)

Welcome to the hypocritical world of feminism. Now that you're aware of it.. you can start fighting it and exposing it every chance you get.

Australia has one of the highest teen male suicide rates in the world, but if a few girls try, and even if they fail in their suicide bid, a serious state of emergency is declared, and all the while boys are dying at a higher rate.
Dude, consider prostate cancer, in Australia here it kills as many men as breast cancer does women, but receives about 10% of the funding of breast cancer, which is mainly a female cancer, or cervical cancer which kills quite a few less.
Men's health issues are considered to be unsavoury or 'our fault' yet women's health issues are trumpeted as a 'grave threat to the health of the nation'

Depressed men are less likely to get help than depressed women.
Correspondingly, the male suicide rate is higher.
What part of that don't you understand?
You think you know more than the American Psychological Association does?
Look it up yourself.

Everyone knows why men are successful at suicide more so than women. That study was done long ago. Men usually use firearms and they are successful, because a gun rarely fails to kill you. Women, perhaps because of vanity, prefer pills, and often the body involuntarily vomits them up. Both sexes commit suicide at about the same rate, but men are more successfully, so their "suicide successes" have a higher rate. Both sexes turn to suicide from depression, and Bi-polar disease, which has a 10% rate of death from suicide. More money should be spent in research of these diseases, but they do not significantly affect the sexes differently.

Well done TERA. That's called blaming the victim.
owain s is correct about Australia. Boys are 90% of youth suicides but the issue is only addressed if a girl kills herself. If anyone wants to know why boys kill themselves so frequently I suggest they find a copy of "The War Against Boys" by Christina Hoff Summers.
I'll now engage in some victim blaming of my own. There are a million and one ways to kill oneself. If you fail you aren't serious. "Attempted suicides" are nothing more than a cry of "look at me". I have no sympathy. I would argue that the girls who succeed have actually failed in their attempt at "attempted suicide".
I have tried to raise youth suicide as an issue in political settings and EVERY time, like clockwork, the discussion is shifted to how hard it is for the poor girls who attempt it. It's enough to make one want to...
Incognito...
Interestingly the high numbers of male suicides are a very recent phenomenem. Forty years ago the gender numbers were relatively equal.
What has changed? Why are boys so highly represented? Instead of blaming the victims for not seeking help why not ask yourself what causes that level of depression in the first place. Isn't it obvious to you that this type of imbalance is an indicator of problems in our culture. Or is that that they're only male? Please don't try telling us that if it was 90% girls that it wouldn't be being screamed from the rooftops as proof positive of the oppression of women. You know damned well it would.
mtfradgal...If you must insert these other issues here...
What has privilege got to do with suicide? Can you name any privileged class of humans EVER who were 95% of work related death and injury, 95% of the homeless, three quarters of the victims of violence, 85% of suicides, and still expected to lay down their lives to protect the un-privileged class? Ever consider that constantly browbeating those experiencing these things about their being somehow "privileged" may be a big contributor to their suicide rate?
Women are victims of about a quarter of violent crime, half of which is committed by women. Women commit more than two thirds of child abuse and about a half of intimate partner abuse. They are almost certainly more violent than men in domestic/family situations. Men are significantly more violent outside domestic settings mainly against other men. Notably the most violent relationships are those of lesbians.
I can say 98.7 cents on the dollar as I am a tax consultant and see the full income detail for thousands of people every year. The income gap you refer to is predominantly a gap in hours worked. On average it's just over seven hours per week. Single, childless, women tend to outearn men. The "gap" is actually due to married women working part time. Recommend you check out "Why Men Earn More" by Warren Farrell. He includes much excellent advice on what women can do to increase their incomes.
There is no way I would consider you "insane". Misinformed maybe. There is nothing I can do in this world that you cannot. There are no rights I have which are denied you. Do not limit your horizons because others tell you that you are weak. You almost certainly are not.
Tony Sprout...
Look up Murray Straus - some of his work here http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mas2/
He was referenced constantly by feminist advocacy until he made the mistake of including men in his work.
Sorry about my constant ranting here but I have serious misgivings about the way our culture treats boys at the moment.

Regarding the link you posted: It also says that women attempt suicide much more often than men do, and experience a greater frequency of depression than men. It also says that women are also much more prone to reaching out for help when they need it: socially, and therapeutically. It also said that this may be why women do not successfully complete suicide as often. (Their less-lethal attempts may be cries for help.) Maybe men need to learn that it's o.k. to reach out for help. There is absolutely nothing stopping a man from seeking therapy except his pride and/or disbelief that therapy can be of beneficial value. (The pride thing is reinforced by society: particularly male to male. The idea that therapy would be of little value is also more common for men to believe than women. These are socially reinforced ideas that men have, and to change them we need to, as a society, stop reinforcing them.) Men tend to bottle up their emotions. They keep them inside. Often it is hard to tell just how close someone is to the breaking point. Maybe society needs to be more aware of the warning signs. And act upon them. To intervene. But men need to understand that it really is o.k to ask for help. It's not a sign of weakness. I think that's how many guys really do see it (the idea of asking for help or reaching out for support).
Repression and denial are unhealthy. Emotions that are suppressed and/or denied have a way of building up inside until anger is turned inward (or in some cases outward)- in the most extreme cases the result could be a successful suicide, or "going postal." I think we need to raise awareness of how important it is to teach our young boys that it's o.k. to feel. It's o.k. to reach out. Maybe if more people internalize this message, suicide rates for men would go down. (And by the way, I think it would take a massive effort on the part of all of society to impart this message so that men truly internalize it. It's so deeply ingrained in men not to feel, not to express, not to reach out, that it's going to take a lot to get the message through.) Men need to be supportive of each other, too. Women turn to each other in times of stress. Men should be able to turn to their friends, as well, for support.

uh, La belle.
People that commit suicide die.
Simple and small point perhaps, but one I felt bears a mention, anyway. Men and women don't commit suicide at the same rate unless they die at the same rate. The men that do it "more sucessfully" are the only ones that commit suicide. The women that vomit don't and didn't. Get it?

Wow!
This is, indeed, something about which Congress should be doing more than whisper.
My guess is that feminists, especially the real Nazis among them, would certainly be up in arms (and frying pans).
