I do NOT mean this disrespectfully - but why is the symbol for Christianity the device used to kill Jesus?
If he were killed on the rack, would that be the symbol? It just somehow seems inappropriate to use a method of torture/execution as a religious symbol.

Because for God in the flesh to allow himself to be so terribly treated to death (on the cross) is a great thing by which to remember him and the extent of his love for me and you. It was that act that was the pinacle of his work of providing the simple way of salvation for all mankind until he returns. Plus, the minature stone tomb just doesn't work well on a neclace. (joke)

The cross appeared in a vision to Emperor Constantine during the night of 27th October 312 prior to The Battle of Milvian Bridge along with the phrase `with this sign you will conquer` and in which `Christ` told him how to use the `sign` against his enemies. It was adopted as the symbol for Christianity at The Council of Nicea which formed Christianity into a `state` religion.
There is nothing to show that Christians used that sign prior to then.

There are several symbols, the cross intended to remind believers of His sacrifice.
The descending dove is intended to remind believers of the inhabitation of the Holy Spirit which descended on Jesus right after His baptism.
The fish came about when early Christians, afraid of persecution, drew a curve in the sand with a stick. If the respondent drew a mirror curve, thus a fish, then the two recognized each other as Christian. Those, less subtle, who were bold were dipped in hot wax and burned as candles to light the coliseum. In the coliseum, other Christians were offered to lions as food.

Not many people seem to know that the Zealots (a Jewish religious group in the first century) used the cross for a symbol of loyalty and personal sacrifice. In fact many of them were crucified for assassinating or attempting to assassinate Roman officials and other "heathens." Of course Jesus was crucified but did nothing wrong. He even prayed that GOD forgive them. So Jesus' sacrifice was much greater than any.
The Apostle Paul went out to preach nothing except Christ crucified. The symbol of the cross depicts this quite well.

It's a holdover from the old days of spreading religion through violence and fear. I guess that still happens now.
Its Middle age stuff and older. It goes along with some of the old church architecture. Buildings designed to inspire awe and also to intimidate the average guy.
Some people use more benign symbols now but a thousands of years old tradition has a lot of inertia.

In true Christianity there are no signs or symbols.
When Jesus Christ died on the cross the devil put his symbol on Christ's back.
Long before this became a supposed christian symbol it was an occult symbol.
Also the ancient people served Satan in the form of the sun and the cross is the symbol of the sun god.
As christians we are not supposed to crucify Christ on the cross constantly, we are to think of Christ as risen from the dead, and nowseated at the right hand of the Father.
Have you ever seen rock stars wearing the cross?
Christians usually like to say that they are mocking the work on the cross.
This is not so, rock stars wear this symbol around their necks in reverence to their god, satan.

I think it was planned that way, quite frankly. Man's inhumanity to man. It's a very powerful symbol actually.
It's shape is also the shape of a sword's hilt, and in Medieval times, many men would "swear by the rood!" and use their sword, hilt forward in exchange for the actual rood (the cross).
It brings to mind so many things. I think it's an awesome symbol.

the cross is what the apostate Church of Christ adopted as it's symbol in the fourth century. This church had long lost Priesthood Authority and Continued revelation, approx. 100 A.D. around the death of Bishop linus. So this idol came into place because of lost revelation from God. Try looking into the Restored Gospel of Christ with continued Revelation. Mormon.org

It's a good question. It is a bit ironic.
For some more irony, ask KKK members (who are all generally fanatical white supremacist x-tians) why they burn the sacred symbol of their religion to make their racists statements...

Because the Catholic Church likes to re crucify the savior a fresh, and they like to put up idols all over their church, even though the bible forbids it. They also like to change the ten commandments and add a new one in its place.
They take this one out
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
I wonder why
