It is my understanding that urea is an organic chemical from urine. Is the type of urea used in a prescription formula a synthetic form of the compound?

Yes, the urea that is used in topical dermatological formulas like your prescription lotion is definitely synthetically produced. There is a huge market for urea for numerous purposes so production is very high. As an interesting footnote, urea was the first natural compound to be synthesized artificially (in 1828) using inorganic compounds, a major scientific breakthrough at the time.
