when something slips your mind, how do you remember?

The question was probably worded in a awkward manner so let me elaborate.

Have you ever had something on your mind, say maybe the name of the song, or a task you were about to do, and you move and then suddenly you can't remember it? Are you able to retrieve the thought by repeating whatever you were doing when you first thought of it?

Can anyone explain this? I know it doesn't always work, but it usually helps me.

I often go to another room to get something and forget what it was when I get there. It seems to help to retrace my steps back to where I was, look around at what I was doing and somehow I remember what it was! Dont know why

Yeah I had this. It was just there and suddenly gone without at trace in the middle of a sentence I am saying. Not even first character of the name was there anymore.

I try to think of something else and let my brain meanwhile "process the search request" in a more relaxed manner. Suddenly then the name (usually a name) of what I am looking for hits me out of the blue. Has even happened a couple of hours later.

It also helps if you think of things associated with what you are trying to remember. Just try a different path, not the direct path you got stuck with.

Also check why you have "slips". For me it might be that I should take some multivitamins, also could be a low in estrogen.

Yeah, at my age (68) I often suffer from CRS ( can't remember s**t )syndrome. I'm working on a project and go to the garage for a tool. When I get there I cant remember what I want. Have to go back to the project, see where I am and then I remember.

Or talking about an old movie, knowing the actor, able to see his/her face in my mind and can't dredge up the name. I'll try for 5 - 10 minutes, then give up. 20 minutes later when I'm not thinking about it anymore the name will pop into my mind.

I think the memories are there, it just gets harder to access them with age.

Usually for me, I remember it as I am relaxing at night, just before falling asleep. It is as if my brain begins processing the day and the answers just fall out of my head!

I don't remember once it has slipped my mind. It's a bummer and it always bugs the heck out of me.

  • I usually stop and back track my each and every thought prior...one by one.

Until I get back where I need to be!!
