Acer aspire SA90-A97Z.?

Bought this computer just before christmas 2007 to replace

my old ibm thinkcentre which died on me.My problem is that it

freezes sometimes and i can`t do anything but shut down and re-start again.I have upgraded the memory from 512mb to

1024 mb but it still locks up on me .Its an intermittent fault and only happens occasionally. Its running windows vista home basic with a 3.0 ghz pentium d processor.I have all the protection ie anti virus, anti spyware, firewall, windows defender, and other things.

Getting really fed up with it and might put my old hard drive in

with xp on it if i can`t resolve the problem.

Any thoughts peeps.

Update:

Thanks for your help so far.I did have the side panel off to put more memory in so i have actually invalidated the waranty. The machine was quite inexpensive.I will try what you have suggested and thanks again.

Update 2:

Thanks Diego , its a desktop comp not a laptop fyi.(for your information).

Update 3:

Thanks steven h i had a look in device

manager and found no conflicts.

Must be an acer problem. It works ok

when left on for a couple of hours. No

lockup today.

Freezing is often a heart problem. Can your fans and their air outlets.

Vista has some neat programs for nailing done faults. Go control pane, System Maintenance and take a look at the logs and run a few tests. Also check out the device manager and make sure none of your devices are not running properly. (And while your are in this nodule turn of the indexing, it is the biggest resource hog ever.)

It could be a memory problem and Vista has a program to check that, search Help for memory problems.

You may be having a conflict with all the "protection" software you have running. You may want to thin out some software.

I know quite a few people are having problems with Vista for various reasons. If none of the below helps, you should contact either Acer and/or Microsoft.

Look at your Device Manager to see if any of your hardware devices have a yellow "balloon" next to it. If there is, you will probably have to reinstall the drivers.

Make sure you are not blocking any of your machine's air inlets and outlets. An overheated CPU will definitely cause problems.

    Good luck.

Hi I have an Acer Aspire 3000, and including me there seems to be a long list of unlucky aspire users to which this 'freezing' problem affects.

The following workaround worked for me, and might work for you until acer releases a decent patch for their faulty ACPI modules:

    - Remove your laptop battery and start it on AC power

    - Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware or whatever equivalent in Vista and disable the ACPI support

    - Shut down and restart now with your battery on

This will disable the battery support (won't show charge status, and might disable suspend mode) but your laptop will stop freezing while you look for a better solution

    cheers

Your old hard drive with XP will not run on the new machine. It will need to be registered and validated again. An operating system is meant for install on only one machine.

Your new comp should be under warranty or you could try start the comp with few programs running and by process of elimination, determine what is causing the conflict.
