Hairball remedies?

We recently got 2 cats from the RSPCA - brothers aged 8 mths. One of them, Bandit, is a long-haired moggy and we were advised by the RSPCA to invest in some Hairball remedy which we have done but we can't get them to eat it lol...we thought cats ate most things put in front of them lol.....but not this stuff that is Malt flavoured.

Is there a trick to encouraging them, especially Bandit, to eat it?

Update:

Thanks for all the very informative answers...we brush them both but especially the long haired when he's in the right mood lol...he did the whole coughing thing when we brought him home from the RSPCA's cattery which we don't want to witness again!

I had the same problem with my cat. She would not eat the Hairball stuff that comes in a tube. So I started buying her a dry cat food made especially to control hairballs, and cat treats with hairball control also. I also started brushing her a couple times a week with a brush called The Furminator. Silly name, but it is a great brush! It was recommended by our vet because it picks up loose hair from the cat's undercoat (most cheap brushes only pick up hair from the topcoat).

I would recommend you buy dry cat food and cat treats that say "Hairball Control." And if your cats will let you, try to brush them once or twice a week. But don't buy a cheap brush from the pet store. Try the Furminator brush - it cost us about $30 at Petsmart, and it was worth every penny!

If you do these things, I think you will have success and you won't have to worry about forcing kitty to eat the cream stuff. You may not notice a difference right away, but give it a week or two, and you should start to see a reduction in hairballs. After a couple of months, hairballs will be a thing of the past!

    Best of luck!

There's a factor referred to as hairball paste that's made with the aid of Hartz and which you could get it at Walmart and in all probability other retail outlets. It is salmon flavored, you set somewhat bit to your finger and let the cat lick it off, or that you may simply squeeze a small amount to the end of the tube and let the cat eat it from there. It helps the hairballs to pass via the procedure naturally and can hinder the construct up at some point. My cats find it irresistible.

there's a issue called hairball paste this is made by technique of Hartz and also you will get it at Walmart and probable different retail shops. this is salmon flavored, you position fairly on your finger and enable the cat lick it off, or you may basically squeeze a small volume to the top of the tube and enable the cat eat it from there. It helps the hairballs to bypass by the device obviously and could keep away from the upward push contained in the destiny. My cats like it.

If they won't eat hairball remedy willingly, then you should put a dab on the cat's nose or paw, and they will lick it off.

You could also do it a little more forcefully, by opening the mouth and smearing some in there, like pilling a cat. They don't like it but it's good for them.

Science diet pet foods has a hairball formula cat food that does the trick for my cat. It's not cheap, but does the job. And Science diet is recommended by Vets.

After lots of rejection of the store bought stuff I just give them a spoonful of real butter every now and then and it works the same way. They like it it, is cheaper that the hairball stuff and I can keep it in my refrigerator all the time.

Some of the good dry food have special varieties for hairballs. You could always let them have a small amount each day. Give them pouches/meat/fish also.

Usually, that is too long for me. I think it depends on the guy and his face though. Certain guys can pull off long hair and others can't.
